The motoring expert who bought a three-year-old Hyundai Ioniq 5 as a family car went in expecting a coin toss between smart move and disaster, then spent a year testing that assumption in daily life. His verdict is blunt: the horror stories about EV battery degradation, range loss and fragile reliability did not show up in real-world use. If anything, the experiment proved how outdated many assumptions about used electric car reliability and EV ownership costs have become.

Range and Charging: Less Drama, More Planning

This is where many people expect used EV ownership to fall apart, yet it did not. Officially, the 73kWh Ioniq 5 Premium claims 298 miles of range; in reality, it manages about 240 miles on the motorway in summer and around 200 miles in winter. Even after a year, there has been no noticeable drop in what the car can cover day-to-day. That is enough for regular 200-mile round trips and twice-yearly 460-mile family journeys without turning every drive into a charging chess match. Yes, winter trips can need one extra stop to maintain a comfortable buffer, and there have been rare moments of range anxiety when the battery was run down to 2 per cent. But because the car can accept very high charging speeds, typical family breaks for toilets, coffee and a quick playground stop are usually longer than the car needs to recharge. In other words, the humans, not the EV, set the pace.

Living With a Used EV: Comfort, Reliability and Everyday Convenience

Real-world used electric car reliability looks different from the old combustion pattern of leaks, misfires and rusty bodywork. In this case, the pre-delivery inspection uncovered a charging door that wouldn’t open; it was repaired under warranty before the car even left the forecourt. Later, the ventilation fan baulked for a single trip then returned to normal and stayed there. That is the full breakdown list for a year. Day-to-day, the Ioniq 5’s comfortable ride, quiet cabin and sliding rear seats made long journeys calmer and family duties easier. Pre-conditioning became one of the hidden perks of EV life: stepping into a car that has already warmed its cabin and cleared ice in winter, or pre-cooled itself in summer, changes how tolerable bad weather feels. There are annoyances—a smaller boot than the previous estate car and a flimsy-feeling indicator stalk—but they are about design choices, not the electric drivetrain.

Costs and the Hybrid Question: Where Used EVs Win

When you look past upfront price and focus on EV ownership costs, the scepticism starts to crumble. Over 12,000 miles, the Ioniq 5 averaged 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour according to its trip computer. Charging mainly at home on a cheap overnight tariff kept electricity bills far below what its previous diesel estate would have burned through over the same distance. Public charging can be much more expensive, but the maths change if most energy comes from a home socket; used EV buying makes sense once you combine that with fewer moving parts to service. Yes, the first scheduled service was more expensive than expected because of a battery coolant change every four years or 40,000 miles. But the owner expects later services to be cheaper, and the fuel savings already offset earlier running costs. Put plainly: under the right conditions, a used EV can match or beat the long-run case for hybrids on day-to-day expenses.
