The most visible change is the AI-powered search box itself. Autocomplete also gets a serious upgrade: instead of just finishing phrases, it anticipates intent and suggests more context-aware refinements as you write. Beyond better answers in the moment, Google is pushing Search into what it calls an “agentic” era. New Search agents are personalized AI bots that can run continuously on Google’s infrastructure, handling complex, ongoing tasks without constant user intervention. Instead of repeatedly checking Search for updates, you can assign an agent to monitor topics, track events, or watch for content you care about, then send alerts when something relevant happens. These agents can also take action on your behalf, such as browsing websites, calling businesses, or helping with steps toward bookings and appointments. Under the hood, the system leans on Gemini 3.5 Flash, a frontier model tuned for reasoning and multi-step tasks, and on generative layout technology capable of building interactive mini-apps, custom tables, calculators, and visual simulations directly in the results page.

Widgets, Mini-Apps, and a More Unified Google AI Experience

To make search results feel more like tools than static answers, Google is introducing a new layer of interactive widgets and “super widgets” inside Search. Generated on the fly using internal technology, these elements can simulate physics for educational questions, visualize abstract concepts, or assemble specialized calculators tailored to the query. Larger super widgets can behave like lightweight apps for everyday tasks such as moving house, tracking health goals, or planning trips. Where users opt in, they can draw on personal data from services like Gmail, Photos, and Calendar to offer more tailored suggestions and reminders. All of this lives within the Search experience, tightening the integration between core Search, Gemini-driven AI Mode, and Google’s broader productivity ecosystem so that users no longer feel they are jumping between separate products.

YouTube’s Ask YouTube Feature Joins the AI Search Makeover

Google’s AI search ambitions are not limited to the classic search page. On YouTube, a new Ask YouTube feature introduces AI-powered search that can parse more complex, conversational queries across video content. If traditional keyword searches keep surfacing the same unhelpful clips, Ask YouTube aims to filter out the noise and steer you toward more relevant segments and videos, complete with follow-up questioning to refine results. Early access is available to YouTube Premium subscribers through the platform’s experiments page, where it is billed as “Discover a new way to search on YouTube,” with a broader rollout promised soon. Together with the main Google Search AI upgrade, Ask YouTube highlights Google’s wider strategy: embed conversational AI and search agents automation deeply into every surface where people look for information, whether that’s web pages or streaming video.
