What Director Plus Is and Why It Matters

Magewell’s Director Plus is a portable, broadcast-grade, all-in-one production and presentation system that combines 4K/60fps switching, compositing, recording, and live streaming into a single unit for end-to-end live video workflows in the field. As the third system in Magewell’s Director line, it extends portable 4K production beyond studios and fixed control rooms into trucks, flypacks, and improvised control spaces at venues. Director Plus is built for live event streaming, sports, worship, education, medical demonstrations, and enterprise communications, where crews need compact field production equipment that can travel in a case yet perform like a control room. By folding multiple tools—switcher, recorder, graphics, replay, and streaming encoder—into one all-in-one production system, it aims to cut setup time, reduce operator complexity, and standardize workflows for teams that move from site to site.

Expanded Inputs for Hybrid HDMI and IP Workflows

Director Plus is designed around Magewell’s “any source, anywhere” approach, which centers on flexible ingest across traditional AV and IP signals. The unit offers four HDMI inputs and two USB inputs, plus up to ten live IP sources including SRT, RTMP, RTSP, NDI High Bandwidth, and NDI HX3, along with HTML web pages, file-based media, and mobile cameras. In practice, that lets crews mix stage cameras, presentation laptops, remote callers, and graphics feeds without extra converters or patchwork software. Director Plus can combine up to six 4K/60 sources or up to 16 1080p60 sources at once, giving small teams a signal count that previously required a full rack of gear. For outputs, it includes two HDMI and one USB-C interface while also supporting NDI HX3 and common streaming formats, bridging on-site displays and online platforms in a single workflow.

5G and Aggregated Networking for On-Location Streaming

One of the key changes Director Plus brings to portable 4K production is its emphasis on network resilience in the field. The system integrates a 5G modem and 2.5Gbps Ethernet and can aggregate 5G, Wi-Fi, and wired connections to keep live event streaming stable even when a single link is unreliable. That combination is aimed at remote production teams and small OB setups working in venues with unpredictable connectivity, where streaming failures can be more damaging than camera glitches. According to Magewell, Director Plus can receive and transmit multiple network streams at once while maintaining high-quality performance. For live producers, that means a single box can handle inbound IP feeds from remote contributors, return feeds for talent, and simultaneous multi-platform streaming, trimming the number of separate encoders and routers they have to transport and configure on show day.

Consolidating Tools into an All-in-One Production System

Beyond connectivity, Director Plus is about collapsing many discrete tools into a portable all-in-one production system. It includes switching, compositing, telestration, and instant replay, enabling crews to build full shows without extra replay servers or graphics machines. A built-in 7-inch touchscreen provides direct control on the device, while the free Director Utility mobile app and third-party plugins and APIs expand control to tablets, phones, or integrated control surfaces. For field production equipment planners, this consolidation translates into fewer cases, fewer power drops, and fewer interoperability headaches. As Amy Zhou, Sales Director at Magewell, states, “Director Plus addresses these needs by providing the highest possible signal counts and quality at an affordable cost while maintaining the reliability and ease of use that Magewell has become known for.” That pitch directly targets teams who need broadcast-style shows with limited staff and time.

Positioning Magewell in the Portable 4K Production Market

Director Plus debuts at InfoComm 2026 as the latest signal that portable 4K production gear is maturing from niche to mainstream. With three Director models now in its lineup, Magewell is building a family aimed at different scales of live event streaming, from small studios to full remote productions. Director Plus, with its expanded HDMI and IP inputs and integrated 5G, is clearly aimed at mid-tier and mobile workflows such as broadcast trucks, corporate roadshows, and campus-wide events. By focusing on all-in-one design, IP flexibility, and hybrid connectivity, Magewell positions itself as a central player for teams standardizing on compact, network-aware tools. For buyers, the strategic question becomes whether to continue assembling racks of single-purpose devices or commit to integrated systems like Director Plus that promise faster deployment, simpler training, and more consistent results across diverse locations.
