At the same time, SAP shifted its cloud-only AI stance in May 2026, agreeing to bring a significant share of Joule assistants and agents to hybrid landscapes that connect to on-premises SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA. Third-party providers are exploiting this opening. From a user’s point of view, the appeal of headless ERP is concrete. Comparable enterprises are already testing agent layers over existing cores before committing to full re-platforming. SAP’s partnerships show how those agents can act. n8n announced on May 12 that SAP had made a strategic investment in its workflow automation platform, as part of a deal valuing n8n at $5.2 billion, with a multi-year agreement to embed n8n natively in Joule Studio. Embedded orchestration means agents can update ECC, route approvals, and maintain audit trails instead of stopping at suggestions. On the customer side, Google Gemini capabilities are being brought into SAP Commerce Cloud through a Shopping Assistant that can engage through chat, voice, and text. The catch is that bad data and weak governance will be exposed faster; agentic AI makes sloppy back offices painfully visible.
What Comes Next: Headless as a Strategic Delay, Not a Destination
Headless ERP is not a permanent escape from S/4HANA; it is a strategic delay that can be smart or dangerous. The 2027 support cliff reshapes ERP buying behavior, with roughly half of ECC users expected to stay on legacy platforms past the deadline and weigh third-party support and decoupled architectures alongside SAP’s migration path. Some of SAP’s AI capabilities are available now, others are targeted for Q3 or H2 2026, and many will mature through partner integration, licensing decisions, and customer implementation experience. Data movement is becoming a liability, which pushes more value into architectures that keep SAP business context at the center while allowing external agents, models, and workflows to operate around it.
