Perplexity Pro Limits Spark Backlash Over Advanced AI Access
Perplexity Pro subscribers have flooded social platforms and forums with complaints that their access to advanced AI models has been sharply curtailed. Users report hitting weekly AI model usage caps far sooner than before, even when they deliberately cut back their activity. The complaints focus on Perplexity’s most capable options, like Gemini 3.1 Pro or the Thinking model, while standard models appear largely unaffected. Some subscribers say they now run into limits after only 10 to 20 advanced queries a day, and others claim just a handful of requests is enough to exhaust their allowance. A few also report stricter constraints on file uploads and lower token ceilings per query. When they hit these walls, they are prompted to upgrade to the far more expensive Perplexity Max tier for “enhanced access to advanced models,” intensifying concerns that limits are being used to push upsells.
From Generous Promos to Tight AI Model Usage Caps
Perplexity Pro’s rapid growth has been fueled in part by generous promotional offers. Free or heavily discounted Pro subscriptions have circulated widely through partnerships with hardware makers, telecoms, payment platforms, and other brands. Many users redeemed these promo codes for months of advanced AI access at little or no direct cost. Over time, however, a secondary market emerged around these codes, with some being resold or shared in ways that violated Perplexity’s terms. According to accounts from affected users, the new Perplexity Pro limits seem to target access to advanced AI models specifically, not the basic tiers that are less computationally expensive. That distinction has led to speculation that Perplexity is tightening AI model usage caps where its infrastructure costs are highest, particularly on accounts whose entitlement to advanced features is harder to verify or may be tied to promotional offers rather than standard paid plans.
Perplexity Blames Promo Code Fraud and Unauthorized Resale
After days of user reports, Perplexity finally acknowledged that some accounts are facing new constraints. A company spokesperson explained that accounts linked to promotional-code offers are subject to adjusted enforcement because of fraud and unauthorized resale. Perplexity says some people may have unknowingly purchased invalid or misused promo codes from third parties, effectively gaining access to advanced AI tools they were not legitimately entitled to. That, the company argues, made stricter controls necessary to protect its service from abuse. However, Perplexity has not clearly specified whether every promo-based Pro account is affected or only those flagged as suspicious. Social media posts suggest the issue is widespread, with users on legitimate partner deals finding their advanced AI access downgraded without warning. The lack of transparent criteria for who gets limited, and by how much, has amplified confusion and mistrust around the new enforcement regime.
User Frustration, Perplexity Max Upsell, and Communication Gaps
For legitimate Perplexity Pro subscribers, the biggest concern is not just reduced access but the way changes appeared. Many say they received no proactive notice before running into new caps, only a prompt suggesting they upgrade to Perplexity Max for better advanced AI access. With Perplexity Pro priced at USD 204 (approx. RM950) per year when billed annually and Perplexity Max at USD 2,004 (approx. RM9,350) per year, the jump is substantial, fueling suspicion that enforcement is doubling as a revenue lever. Perplexity has pledged to clarify applicable limits for affected users and to assist anyone who believes they were restricted in error via its help center and support email. Until the company publishes clear, consistent usage terms and distinguishes between fraud mitigation and genuine subscription entitlements, tension between cost-conscious users and Perplexity’s need to curb abuse will likely remain unresolved.
