For the museum’s opening exhibition, Machine Dreams: Rainforest, the brand’s Fragrance Métier team built twelve “olfactive imprints” guided by a proprietary fragrance model and Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model. These scents are not sold as perfumes; they live inside an immersive art environment, delivered by responsive smart diffusers that synchronize smell with AI-generated visuals and visitor movements, turning fragrance into a live, data-linked performance.
From rainforest memories to the scent of data
What makes this project more than a tech stunt is the breadth of olfactory territory it covers. Some imprints, like Petrichor Memoria (Scent of Rain), rely on Headspace Technology and Osmobloom extraction to capture the precise aroma of rain-soaked earth or living plants in situ, preserving delicate notes without heat, water or solvent. Others stretch far beyond nature. Synthetic Essence, also described as Scent of Data, is crafted as “the world’s first scent of digital code,” blending clean musks and aldehydes at doses rarely used in commercial perfume to evoke an “algorithmic pulsation of code on the dark and warm background.” According to Cosmetics Business, this non-existent smell was built mainly from L’Oréal’s latest perfume palette molecules, using molecular synthesis to turn an abstract idea—the interior of a computer—into a sensory experience visitors can wear around their necks via smart diffusers.
Immersive fragrance technology and the new luxury experience
The DATALAND collaboration also signals how immersive fragrance technology is reshaping luxury scent innovation. In the 25,000‑square‑foot space, 1.5 billion pixels of AI-generated rainforest visuals are paired with responsive scent diffusion, so each visitor’s path triggers shifting clouds of aroma. A wearable smart diffuser worn around the neck releases the twelve fragrances in synchrony with digital artworks, turning the olfactory art experience into something intimate and mobile rather than a static spritz in the air. L’Oréal Luxe’s team speak openly about the creative freedom this format allows: safety remains a limit, but mass-market appeal does not. Instead of tuning a formula to please millions, they optimise for message, emotional impact and boldness. Fragrance becomes closer to performance art or experimental music than to a classic product test, positioning luxury scent as a ticket into a multi-sensory narrative rather than a bottle on a shelf.
Beyond aesthetics: AI as creative provocation for perfumers
For perfumers, AI fragrance creation is less about replacing their nose and more about removing old constraints. Tools like L’Oréal Luxe’s proprietary fragrance model and data from the Large Nature Model expand the palette of references and predicted accords, surfacing combinations that might not appear in a traditional brief focused on floral, woody or gourmand families. At the same time, cutting-edge extraction—Headspace for capturing the air around a waterfall or forest floor, and Osmobloom for solvent-free plant extraction—adds rare realism and nuance. Creative leads Veronique Ferval and Patricia Soyer frame this as a chance to “create trends, not follow them,” because the goal is not to scent a body but to stage an idea: fungi breathing under soil, rain as memory, code as a musky, sparkling texture.
