The same test on YouTube Shorts found 104 of the first 500 videos, or 21%, met that definition. According to Kapwing, “59% of the first TikToks served to a new account are AI-generated, low-quality videos.” This 3x difference matters because the first few hundred recommendations often shape what users think the platform is about. Instead of discovering diverse, creator-led content, many newcomers mostly encounter synthetic video content stitched from AI scripts, stock animations, and cloned narrators. YouTube’s lower AI slop rate suggests its algorithm quality and detection work are limiting some of the flood, while TikTok’s default experience still pushes automated clips, even though the app now provides user controls to see more or less AI generated content.

Kapwing’s broader review of 10,742 TikTok videos across 20 categories shows AI slop clustering around children’s and informational content. In the Kids category, 57.4% of 2,000 featured videos were classified as AI slop, with tags such as #cartoonkids reaching 97 of 100 videos and #forkids at 79%. Science and Education, Health, and History followed with AI slop rates of roughly one-third of analyzed videos. The report’s infographic notes that #healthtips alone reached a 74% AI slop rate. These categories are especially sensitive because many viewers treat them as trusted learning spaces. Kapwing flagged examples where fast-paced, AI generated content introduced counting errors, misspellings, and distorted lettering. Pediatrician Dana Suskind described the trend as “toddler AI misinformation at an industrial scale,” warning that flawed educational clips can miswire developing brains. For creators, TikTok’s AI slop surge changes how discovery works. New accounts are welcomed by automated explainers, cartoon compilations, and synthetic presenters, not by the human-led micro-communities that once defined the app. That makes it harder for original work to stand out, especially in Kids, Education, Health, and History categories where AI slop now occupies a large share of the feed.
