YouTube Premium podcasts are long-form audio or video shows on YouTube and YouTube Music that paying subscribers can listen to with extra benefits such as background play, smarter controls, and new AI-powered discovery tools that make following favourite creators and conversations easier on mobile devices. YouTube has confirmed that podcasts now attract more than 1 billion monthly active viewers, turning the platform into a major home for talk shows, interviews, and niche audio content. According to YouTube, Premium users alone watched over 800 million hours of podcast content in April 2026, powered by video podcasts and traditional audio shows. To reward these heavy listeners, YouTube Premium is rolling out new features like On the Go Mode and the Auto Speed feature, along with expanded Ask Music recommendations, to improve the podcast listening experience and set the subscription apart from free listening.
On the Go Mode: A cleaner screen for real-world listening
On the Go Mode is YouTube Premium’s new audio-friendly layout built for people who listen while commuting, exercising, or doing chores. Instead of the full video interface, it shows a static image with large, simple controls so you can skip forward, skip backward, or pause without staring at your screen. This makes background listening feel closer to using a traditional podcast app while still keeping your shows inside YouTube’s ecosystem. The feature is live now for Premium users on Android, with an iOS rollout planned in the coming months, so it is arriving in phases across platforms. By cutting visual clutter and putting tap-friendly buttons front and center, On the Go Mode turns YouTube Premium podcasts into a practical option when your hands and eyes are busy but you still want long-form content in your ears.
Auto Speed feature: Faster when it can, slower when it should
The Auto Speed feature aims to make your podcast listening experience more efficient without forcing you to pick a single fixed playback rate. Instead of staying at 1.5x or 2x all the time, Auto Speed listens to what is happening in the audio. When a host speaks slowly or there is small talk, it speeds things up. When the discussion gets dense or information-heavy, it automatically slows down so you can follow the details. Think of it as a smarter upgrade to the manual speed controls Premium subscribers already have. Auto Speed is currently available for YouTube Premium podcast listeners on Android, with support “coming soon” to iOS, so users on both platforms will see it in stages. The result is a smoother flow through long episodes, helping you save time while staying engaged with complex topics.
Ask Music and discovery: Finding your next favourite show
Beyond better playback, YouTube is also working on discovery for Premium listeners. The Ask Music tool inside YouTube Music, which already builds personalised music playlists and radio stations, is now expanding to cover podcasts. Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers in select regions can ask for shows based on mood, genre, or titles they already enjoy, and the system surfaces podcast recommendations that match those tastes. This tackles a common problem for podcast fans: too many options and not enough guidance. Combined with existing Premium perks such as background play, faster fixed playback speeds, and Jump Ahead controls, these discovery tools turn YouTube into a more complete podcast platform. As YouTube pushes deeper into podcasts and video shows, these Premium-exclusive features help differentiate the paid tier and make long-form listening more convenient for people who spend much of their time on mobile.
