The twist: this headline moment for the brand’s EV strategy is built not on an in-house or Alliance architecture but on the Foxtron Bria, a model developed by Foxconn and Yulon Motor and manufactured by the well-known electronics giant. Mitsubishi has signed a supply deal with the Taiwanese firm and made targeted design changes—subtle Dynamic Shield influences on the front light bar, Mitsubishi wheels, and branding—while leaving most of the exterior and interior architecture intact. The all-wheel-drive variant is expected to mirror the Foxtron Bria with 407 PS (299 kW) and 700 Nm, slashing the 0–100 km/h sprint to 3.9 seconds and offering an estimated 466 km NEDC range, or around 400 km WLTP. That is performance that will not embarrass more expensive electric SUVs from established players.

The single-motor rear-drive version looks designed for efficiency-minded buyers, with 232 PS (171 kW), 350 Nm, a 6.8-second 0–100 km/h time, and a 57.7 kWh LFP battery delivering 516 km NEDC, about 440 km on more realistic WLTP estimates. Both versions support up to 134 kW DC fast charging, with 10–80% top-ups in under 30 minutes. As one spec sheet summary puts it, “the AWD model pushes out 407 PS and 700 Nm, dropping the century sprint to just 3.9 seconds.” The raw figures are not the problem; the challenge is whether Mitsubishi can package and price this power in a way that undercuts the usual performance EV suspects.

Mitsubishi is leaning on the Active Sports Crossover heritage to sell the ASX VR-e as a daily driver with a performance edge. Practical touches are more of a mixed bag. The rear boot is a modest 320 litres, while a 52-litre front boot is oddly optional rather than standard. That reflects the car’s compromise: positioned as an affordable EV crossover but not a cargo champion. Mitsubishi will offer LS, Aspire, Exceed, and GSR trims, suggesting a spread from basic commuter spec to sportier, feature-rich variants. The brand promises “sporty performance and responsive handling” after extensive local testing and tuning, but until independent drives prove that claim, the ASX VR-e remains an intriguing proposition rather than a confirmed driver’s EV.

Foxconn EV Manufacturing: Shortcut or Smart Strategy?

The ASX VR-e’s most important story is not its badge but its birth certificate. This is a Foxtron Bria underneath, built by Foxconn and co-developed with Yulon Motor, then lightly adapted by Mitsubishi. Foxconn’s presence signals that EV manufacturing is entering an electronics-style era: contract-built hardware with brand-specific skins and software. Mitsubishi signed a supply deal last May and, in the time since, shaped the car to its needs rather than starting from a clean sheet.

The upside is obvious: lowered development risk and faster access to a modern electric platform with competitive range and charging speeds. The downside is differentiation. When your “first production non-kei EV” is visually and structurally near-identical to its donor car, the brand’s value must come from tuning, quality control, aftersales, and long-term support. For EV buyers comparing it with established crossovers from Tesla or Hyundai, the question is blunt: is a rebadged Foxconn-built SUV compelling enough to sway them from companies that have spent years building their own dedicated electric architectures and ecosystems?

Where the ASX VR-e Fits in the EV Crossover Fight

Viewed against benchmark electric crossovers like the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Mitsubishi ASX VR-e is a contrarian entry. It lacks a distinctive, ground-up EV platform story, but answers with a blend of strong dual-motor performance, competitive range, and the promise of more accessible positioning in the market. Its SUV-hatchback form will appeal to buyers who want an affordable EV crossover that does not scream futurist design but still delivers quick acceleration and fast charging.

The bigger picture is that Mitsubishi has chosen partnership over isolation. By tying its first mainstream electric SUV to Foxconn EV manufacturing, it has effectively admitted that in-house development alone is not the fastest route to relevance. Whether that humility turns into a long-term advantage depends on execution: pricing, reliability, software support, and how well the promised “sporty performance and responsive handling” holds up in independent tests. If Mitsubishi gets those details right, the ASX VR-e could be the practical, performance-tinged stepping stone many buyers have been waiting for.
