Sunbird’s comeback: blue bubbles return with a trust deficit
Sunbird is a cross-platform messaging app that tries to bring iMessage on Android into a single inbox alongside RCS and SMS, promising blue bubbles in iPhone group chats and full feature parity for Android users who are tired of being treated as second-class participants in mixed-platform conversations.
Sunbird is back on the Play Store, promising iMessage on Android once again and a clean break from its infamous first attempt. The app now offers one inbox for iMessage, Google Messages RCS and SMS, with a “priority” view that separates important conversations from verification codes and unknown senders. For Android users battling the green bubble problem, this sounds like salvation: reactions and replies should work, and they should appear as full blue bubble members in iPhone group chats instead of breaking threads for everyone. But the key story is not convenience. It is whether anyone should trust Sunbird with their messages after it leaked more than 630,000 media files and sent Apple ID credentials over unencrypted HTTP in its previous incarnation.

What changed in Sunbird’s encryption story
The old Sunbird did almost everything wrong from a security standpoint. Security researchers found that its servers intercepted messages, stored contents, attachments and contact data in plaintext on Firebase, and even transmitted Apple ID credentials over unencrypted HTTP, despite marketing claims of full end‑to‑end encryption. That fiasco forced the service to shut down in November 2023 and turned Sunbird’s name into a warning label for anyone who cares about privacy.
Now, Sunbird says the architecture is different. The company describes application‑layer encryption using AES, with keys that live only on the client side, and promises that every message is encrypted on-device with AES‑256 before leaving over certificate‑pinned connections. It also claims that messages are no longer stored on company hardware. On paper, that is a major improvement over the 2023 design. But cryptography buzzwords do not automatically equal safety. Until independent experts verify that keys never leave devices and that servers cannot read message contents, these claims should be treated as marketing, not proof. Sunbird insisted its first setup was secure—right up until it was not.

The green bubble problem Sunbird is trying to monetize
Sunbird exists because cross-platform messaging is still socially broken even after Apple added RCS. RCS support improved photo quality, typing indicators and read receipts between Android and iOS, and cross-platform end‑to‑end encryption has since landed as well. But the green bubble problem remains: drop one Android user into an iMessage group and reactions, threaded replies and group controls still misbehave for everyone.
That annoyance has real social consequences. One survey found that 38 percent of Android users had missed or misread messages because of the green bubble mess, and 30 percent had considered buying an iPhone to escape the pressure. Among teens, where 88 percent already own an iPhone, bubble colour acts as a social signal instead of a technical detail. People are going to absurd lengths to hide that they use a “green bubble” device, from home Mac servers to rented Mac Minis. Sunbird aims to charge for removing that stigma by making Android users appear as blue bubbles in iPhone group chats and stopping them being “the reason a group chat stops working.”
Can Sunbird’s new promises earn back trust?
From a feature standpoint, Sunbird is appealing. Beyond blue bubbles and a unified inbox, it offers a Primary/Secondary split for conversations today and plans “Sunbird Intelligence,” which will summarise missed chats and include an assistant to draft replies or move conversations between tabs, all said to run on-device. The company also says WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger support for the same inbox is in late development, targeting a rollout in Q3 2026. On the surface, this is the all‑in‑one messaging hub many Android users have wanted.
The deeper question is whether users should hand their most sensitive conversations to a company that previously treated security as an afterthought. Sunbird’s new encryption design is a positive sign, but it demands independent scrutiny before anyone treats its privacy claims as reliable. Sunbird earned its skepticism the hard way, and one relaunch does not erase its past. Until outside researchers confirm that Sunbird cannot read messages or reuse credentials, the safest stance is cautious distance. The green bubble problem is real, but no colour of chat bubble is worth another plaintext disaster.
