What iOS 27’s Separate Volume Controls Do
iOS 27 separate volume controls are a new set of sound settings that let you adjust alarms, alerts, and ringtones independently so you can lower notification volume, keep calls loud, and fine-tune how your iPhone sounds without constant manual changes. In earlier versions, a single “Ringtone and Alerts” slider controlled almost everything, which meant muting notifications often risked missing calls or quietening alarms. With the new independent alarm volume, notification volume control, and ringtone alert volume sliders, you can set three different levels that stay in place regardless of your hardware buttons. This change fixes a long-standing annoyance for people who keep their phones on silent or near-silent but still need reliable alarms and audible calls. It is especially useful if chat apps, system sounds, or timers were regularly louder—or quieter—than you wanted.

Step 1: Open the New Sound & Haptics Layout
To start using iOS 27’s separate volume options, open the Settings app and tap Sound & Haptics. This page is where Apple has replaced the single Ringtone and Alerts slider with three independent sections: Ringtone, Alarms and Timers, and Alerts and System Sounds. According to PCMag, “this page has one volume slider under Ringtone and Alerts” in current versions, but in iOS 27 you can expand it to three different sliders. At the top, you will see the main ringtone alert volume, which still controls how loud phone calls ring. Below, the additional sections hold their own sliders once you unlock them. Before you change anything, note how loud your current ringtone is so you can keep call volume where you like it while you quieten alarms or notifications.
Step 2: Set an Independent Alarm and Timer Volume
Next, scroll to the Alarms and Timers section. By default, you may see a switch labeled Match Ringtone Volume. Turn this off to enable independent alarm volume control. When the toggle is off, a new slider appears that controls how loud standard alarms and timers sound, separate from your ringtone alert volume. Move the slider right for a louder wake-up or left for a softer beep during meetings. Lifehacker notes that “moving the slider all the way to the left reduces the volume of alerts significantly, but it does not mute alerts entirely,” so expect very quiet alarms rather than complete silence. Keep in mind this slider does not change the Sleep/Wake Up alarm set from the Health app; that alarm keeps its own adjustable volume inside the Clock app’s Sleep settings.
Step 3: Control Notification and System Sound Volume
Now adjust notification volume control without affecting calls. In Sound & Haptics, find the Alerts and System Sounds section. As with alarms, you will see Match Ringtone Volume. Turn this off to unlock a dedicated slider for alerts and system sounds. This slider controls noises from messaging apps, incoming notification banners, and various system beeps, letting you lower them while your ringtone remains loud enough for important calls. If repeated alerts from chats or email used to force you into full silent mode, this change means you can mute their impact without risking missed calls. Pair a low alerts level with haptics to keep awareness without noise. If you need quick changes later, return to this slider instead of constantly changing the global ringtone alert volume.
Step 4: Fine-Tune Ringtone Volume and Everyday Use
With alarms and alerts detached, focus on your ringtone alert volume at the top of Sound & Haptics. Use the main slider to set how loud phone calls should ring, independent from the quieter alarm and notification levels you configured. This setup is ideal if you keep your iPhone on silent most of the day or rely on haptics yet still want to catch every call from key contacts. While iOS 27 separate volume sliders give you fine control across the board, there are still limits: Apple has not added per-app volume yet, so you cannot make YouTube louder and a single messaging app softer on their own. For now, think of these three sliders as your global sound baseline, then adjust specific app behaviors using their in-app notification or sound settings where available.
