For ultra-budget phones below $99, memory has surged past 64% of component costs. When more than half of your cost base is locked to a single component class, you have no real flexibility left.

TrendForce predicts DRAM prices will jump by another 50% or more in 2026, which makes it almost impossible for budget device makers to avoid passing on the component cost hike. The result is a global budget smartphone sector facing a severe crisis as surging memory prices force manufacturers to scale back production. Omdia forecasts that smartphones priced below $400 will fall by more than 22% in shipments this year. As capacity is reallocated to AI, inexpensive Android phones face an expensive problem and the cheap phone market contracts. This is a redistribution of silicon: AI workloads win; low-income users lose.

When Specs Go Backwards: What Buyers Will Feel

With memory costs out of control, manufacturers have two levers left: cut specs or raise prices. They are doing both. To offset rising memory costs, they have tried switching from LTPO to cheaper LTPS display panels, reducing the number of cameras, using smaller image sensors, or reverting to previous-generation system-on-chip designs, trimming up to around 30% from some component blocks. At the same time, vendors including Transsion, OPPO, vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi have been forced to raise retail prices to maintain thin profits.

This double squeeze means buyers can expect to get a less capable device than they might previously have expected at a given price point this year, all thanks to the AI bubble causing a run on memory chips. Budget consumers, who are highly sensitive to price, respond by delaying upgrades, moving to second-hand phones, or stretching to a mid-range device and keeping it longer. The shift could have the biggest impact in emerging markets, where affordable Android phones remain the primary means of internet access and where fewer choices, slower hardware improvements, and higher prices will be felt the most.

The Sub-$400 Segment Shrinks – and How to Respond

Omdia expects sub-$400 smartphone shipments to drop 22 percent year-on-year in 2026, compared with a 12 percent decline for the overall market. While the cheap phone market contracts, smartphones priced above $400 are expected to grow 5.7% as vendors shift production toward mid-to-high-end devices where memory is a smaller share of the cost and margins are healthier. It is no surprise that buyers are choosing to hold onto smartphones for longer, with an average lifetime of 4.2 years expected to stretch out to 4.7 years before the end of the decade.

In the near term, buyers looking for the best value might find it in discounted previous-generation phones rather than newly launched budget models until component costs stabilise. For now, the logic of the market is clear: AI data centers get the first claim on DRAM and NAND, and budget smartphone prices rise as a consequence.
