VR sign language has implications far beyond a single platform. McIntyre’s work points to the risk of social isolation when deaf users cannot participate fully in digital spaces, but it also reveals a roadmap for virtual reality accessibility. Features that centre deaf communication—such as avatars capable of nuanced signing, built-in subtitles and real-time sign-to-speech or speech-to-sign translation—could benefit social apps, esports broadcasts and game lobbies alike.
