AI game cloning is the use of generative AI tools and coding assistants to rapidly recreate another developer’s game concept, mechanics, or presentation with minimal skill, time, or cost, so that cheap, playable copies can be pushed to digital storefronts before or shortly after the original releases, fragmenting its audience and earnings.
The core problem isn’t that AI helps people make games; it’s that AI game generation has turned copying into a near-instant reflex. Artificial intelligence now makes coding faster and more accessible, but many independent developers warn that the same systems have made it easier than ever to copy original game ideas. Generative AI has made the work of plagiarizing an idea a lot simpler. The result is a lopsided market: original creators spend months or years prototyping, testing, and polishing, while cloners can feed their work into an AI, hit generate, and ship. That imbalance is not an accident—it is the logical outcome of platforms that reward overproduction and short-term tricks over craft and originality.
Freya Holmér’s Rotating Tetris and the New Race to the Bottom
The clearest warning shot came from a single prototype. Game developer and Unity tool maker Freya Holmér had long imagined a twist on Tetris where the whole board rotates; she turned that idea into a prototype and posted a 50‑second clip to social media in mid‑March, asking, “Is this anything?” Within days, someone replied with a vibecoded version of her prototype and claimed, “This can be built into a game by tomorrow”. Soon after, up to four vibecoded versions appeared, with AI-generated versions reaching digital storefronts within days of her video.
One developer, Charlie Greenman, admitted he recreated Holmér’s idea after seeing it online; using AI prompts and roughly one day of development, he released a game called Rotris. According to 404 Media, developers are increasingly relying on AI coding assistants to generate playable games from existing concepts with minimal manual programming. These clones lacked Holmér’s careful animations and design nuance, but that barely matters to storefront algorithms. Her experience shows the new reality: share a clever mechanic too early, and someone can vibecode a crude clone in a day, slap it on an app store, and start siphoning attention before your game even has a chance to launch.
From Indie Dreams to Storefront Slop: How AI Floods the Shelves
AI game cloning doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it plugs directly into a clone economy that digital stores already reward. Several companies have had huge success flooding the market with knockoffs designed to confuse players looking for games to play. Copycat and clone games have proliferated for years, and generative AI is only making the problem worse. The incentives and infrastructure of app stores and console marketplaces are built to encourage this kind of overproduction, as media scholar Jeremy Morris notes.
This overproduction is profitable. One well-known mobile publisher received USD 200 million (approx. RM920 million) in funding and later reached a valuation of USD 1.4 billion (approx. RM6.44 billion) while being repeatedly accused of making copycat games. Another company, Midnight Works, claims that 80 percent of the games it publishes pass USD 1 million (approx. RM4.6 million) in revenue, 15 percent make over USD 100,000 (approx. RM460,000), and only five percent fail to hit significant milestones, all while employing 300 people. Many AI-generated games lack the polish and creativity of the originals, yet they show up on digital storefronts at low prices or for free, making it harder for independent developers to stand out in increasingly crowded marketplaces.
The Uneven Fight: Indie Creators vs. Instant AI Clones
For indie game developers, AI game cloning isn’t a theoretical fear; it is a direct economic threat. AI-generated versions of an idea can appear online within days of a prototype video, with similar games reaching digital storefronts soon after. For smaller studios with limited marketing budgets, a flood of inexpensive AI-generated alternatives can cut visibility and damage potential sales before the original game is even released. Many AI-generated games may lack polish, but they still compete for the same keywords, genres, and player curiosity.
The speed and cost-effectiveness of AI cloning create a structural disadvantage. Greenman built and released Rotris in roughly one day using AI prompts, while Holmér invested significant time and effort in her prototype and its animations. As she notes, it used to take effort, skill, and knowledge to steal an idea; now there is a general devaluing of those things. Indie developers also lack reliable legal or platform-level protections. Holmér says it “disincentives me from posting about my work” and gives her anxiety that someone will finish and monetize her concept the moment she shares it. When creators are scared to show their games, everyone loses: players, platforms, and the medium itself.
What Happens When Sharing Becomes a Risky Bet?
The long-term damage of AI game cloning may not be the clones themselves, but what they do to the culture of sharing. Early gameplay videos and prototypes used to help developers build communities, gather feedback, and attract players; now, some fear that revealing new mechanics too soon will let others recreate their ideas before the original hits the market. Holmér’s experience confirms that fear: “anytime you post anything, someone is going to come in to finish it for you and then monetize it and steal the whole concept”.
If indie developers stop showing their work in progress, digital stores become even more dominated by safe sequels and AI-generated knockoffs. Players get more slop, fewer surprises. Platforms keep rewarding overproduction because it fills their shelves, even if it drains creativity. AI game generation itself is not the villain—there is real value when creators use it to build their own ideas faster. But without rules that punish industrial imitation and reward originality, AI game cloning will keep turning every clever prototype into a starting gun for cloners. If we want lively, original indie games to survive, we have to stop treating “ship a clone in a day” as clever hustle and start calling it what it is: extraction, not innovation.
