The cost for women athletes — and what needs to change

Because fitness trackers women use are still built on male-first algorithms, training guidance is subtly misaligned from day one. Recovery suggestions, intensity zones and readiness scores are tuned to a body with different hormone rhythms, cardiovascular responses and sleep patterns. Over a cycle, that mismatch can push a woman to ignore fatigue in high‑progesterone phases, chase VO2 max improvements during weeks when her physiology favours recovery, or view normal shifts in heart rate variability women experience as signs of decline rather than adaptation. Even fitness age, while a solid indicator of overall fitness, should be taken with a pinch of salt because it is not a completely reliable measurement. Women are right to question whether their watch understands their body. Until wearables treat female hormones, pregnancy, postpartum and menopause as central inputs, not side notes, female athletes should treat every metric as a starting point, not a verdict.
