The update centers on a tighter link between Chrome and Google Wallet, which now serves as a secure vault for identity data used in mobile form filling. Once set up, Chrome can pull encrypted information from Wallet, including flight details, vehicle information like license plate and VIN, and identity documents. According to Droid-Life, Google is rolling this out on Android and iOS, bringing a consistent experience across platforms. If a user enters a passport number, driver’s license, or Known Traveler Number manually for the first time, Chrome can offer to save it so the data becomes available for future autofill. On Android, this deepens Wallet’s role beyond payments, turning it into a central hub for both payment and identity credentials, all available inside Chrome’s familiar autofill interface.
Streamlining Mobile Form Filling with Identity Documents
This change aims to remove friction from mobile form filling, especially when travel and verification services demand detailed identity information. Users booking flights, checking in online, renting cars, or completing security forms often need to type long passport numbers, document expiry dates, and license details on small screens. With the new passport autofill feature, Chrome can now extract those values from Google Wallet or saved browser data and place them directly into the right fields. The same applies to flight details and vehicle information, which Chrome can identify and insert when websites request them. This reduces typos and speeds up repeated tasks, such as entering a Known Traveler Number for frequent bookings. With more sensitive information available through Chrome autofill identity documents, Google is emphasizing encryption and consent. According to iPhone in Canada, Google says nothing is shared without a user’s explicit approval, and the data stays encrypted throughout the process. Users can review what’s stored and disable specific categories under Google Wallet settings or the “Autofill and passwords” menu in Chrome. Sensitive digital ID cards are handled separately, with their own security controls, rather than being treated like ordinary autofill fields. This separation is meant to reduce exposure if a device is shared or a browser session is left open.
