YouTube channel ETA Prime installed SteamOS 3.8.7 beta and updated to 3.9, confirming that Valve’s OS boots, sleeps, and runs games on this Intel handheld gaming device. According to ETA Prime, “Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p with the Steam Deck preset hits around 40fps at a 17W power target,” rising to nearly 60fps at 1080p when power is raised to 30W. Forza Horizon 6 can approach or exceed 60fps at 17W and 30W, though noticeable dips suggest the OS is still learning how to split power between CPU and GPU. The experience is playable, but performance and missing features like power tuning and a working menu button keep it behind MSI’s Windows 11 implementation.

Arc B580 Desktops: Playable, But Mind the Resizable BAR

SteamOS compatibility now extends beyond Intel handhelds to desktop PCs using Arc graphics, with the Arc B580 being the first confirmed example. Reddit user SaperPL reports that SteamOS can be installed on a system with this GPU by first booting from a repair image using a Radeon card, then swapping to the Intel card afterward. Games launch and run, confirming core driver support, but performance is inconsistent. SaperPL found that without resizable BAR enabled, frame rates in titles like Indiana Jones and Toxic Commando could drop to around 20fps, underlining how dependent Arc is on this PCIe feature. Even with things configured correctly, SteamOS still trails equivalent Windows builds in raw performance. For now, Arc B580 users willing to experiment can get a functional SteamOS setup, but it involves extra steps and a tolerance for lower frame rates.

Why Intel Support Matters for SteamOS and Handheld PCs

Moving beyond AMD exclusivity changes the future of SteamOS compatibility. With MSI Claw SteamOS support in beta and Arc B580 desktops up and running, Valve is signaling that SteamOS is meant to be a multi-vendor platform rather than a Steam Deck add-on. This widens the field for Intel handheld gaming devices, which can now target a ready-made OS tuned for controller input, suspend-and-resume, and the Steam Big Picture interface. It may also encourage more OEMs to ship or at least validate SteamOS images alongside Windows. At the same time, early testers note that alternatives like Bazzite and CachyOS currently offer smoother Linux experiences on Intel hardware. SteamOS still needs better power management, interface reliability, and performance parity before it can become the default choice outside Valve’s own hardware.

Early Adopters, Beta Bugs, and the Road to Wider Adoption

Valve’s work on Intel support remains clearly in beta. On the MSI Claw 8 AI+, some buttons do not function correctly, and users cannot yet fine-tune TDP from within SteamOS, limiting efficiency gains compared with Windows. On Arc B580 desktops, install procedures demand tinkering and performance drops sharply without resizable BAR enabled. Retro Handhelds notes that while it is possible to run SteamOS on devices like the MSI Claw A8 and Intel-powered handhelds, Windows still offers better performance and easier configuration, and many users may prefer mature Linux distributions for now. The upside is that every new confirmed Intel device shows Valve’s intent to bring SteamOS to “as many people as possible.” If Valve can close the performance gap and streamline installs, non-Steam Deck handhelds could become far more attractive to PC gamers who want a console-like OS.
