What the Gears E-Day Beta Is—and Why Setup Matters

The Gears E-Day beta is a limited-time test of Gears of War: E-Day’s Horde Siege PvE and 4v4 Versus multiplayer modes that runs in two phases, with early access for pre-order players and subscribers followed by an open beta, and it is designed to stress-test performance, stability, and core gameplay ahead of the full release.

If you treat this beta like a finished product, you will have a bad time. The developer has been clear that stability and performance are still in progress, and that players should expect crashes, dips, and bugs while they test latency, accessibility, cover, visual popping, and out-of-bounds problems. That is exactly why your technical setup matters more than usual. A clean GPU driver update, sensible frame rate settings, and awareness of known technical issues are the difference between meaningful practice and fighting your own machine. The early access window from August 6–10 for pre-orders and Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscribers is short, followed by open beta from August 13–17 for everyone on Xbox and Steam, so wasting a session on avoidable issues is on you, not the game.

Step 1: Update GPU Drivers Before You Queue

If you skip a GPU driver update for the Gears E-Day beta, you are choosing instability. The studio explicitly recommends that Nvidia users be on driver 610.74 before launching, because older drivers are not supported. AMD players are pointed to driver 26.6.4, while Intel GPU players are told to use version 101.8864. That is as close to a non-negotiable requirement as you will see in a beta. According to the developer, “older versions of the driver are currently unsupported,” so clinging to an outdated profile for the sake of a different game is a technical self-own. If Gears E-Day matters to you competitively, you treat this like a mandatory patch, not an optional tweak.

This is not only about crashes. Unsupported drivers often cause shader compilation stalls, visual glitches, and bizarre frame pacing spikes that are impossible to diagnose mid-match. With PvP now included in both Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus across the beta, you cannot afford to lose fights because your screen stutters during a push. Do the update, reboot, and only then think about keybinds and sensitivity.

Step 2: Work With the 150 FPS Frame Rate Cap

You are not breaking 150 FPS in this beta, no matter how powerful your PC is. The Coalition has temporarily capped frame rate at 150 FPS for everyone and disabled frame generation. That cap is not a punishment; it is a stability tool. Wide-open frame rates in an unfinished build amplify every micro-stutter and latency spike. By enforcing a ceiling, the studio narrows the range of behavior they have to debug and gives players a more predictable feel, even if it frustrates 240 Hz monitor owners.

Your job is to tune your frame rate settings around that cap instead of fighting it. Aim for a consistent frame rate close to 150 rather than fluctuating wildly between, say, 80 and 150 depending on the map or particle spam. For competitive Versus, consistent timing beats a higher, unstable number every time. If your PC cannot comfortably reach the cap, lower in-game presets or resolution scaling until your frame graph looks flat rather than noisy; that kind of discipline is part of competitive readiness, not an afterthought.

Step 3: Fix PC Technical Issues Before They Tilt You

Beta bugs are expected, but several technical issues already have clear workarounds, and ignoring them is a choice. The studio has published a list of known problems covering crashes, performance dips, networking quirks, and more. Intel Arc A580 and B580 users, for example, may see poor performance if Resizable BAR (ReBAR) is disabled in the BIOS; enabling both ReBAR and Above 4G Decoding can ease those issues. Intel Arc cards will also take longer to start because shaders are recompiled on every launch. That is not a mystery bug—that is expected behavior you should plan around by launching the game a few minutes early before squad time.

Capture and security tools can be silent saboteurs. Players who want to stream or record with OBS have been advised to be on version 29.0.0 or later to avoid game crashes. Comodo Antivirus may block the executable; right now, fully disabling it is the only fix. Account setup matters too: using one account in the Xbox app and another in the Windows Store can block online systems entirely, and Steam Machine users cannot link accounts during the beta. None of these are mechanical skill issues—this is configuration hygiene, and it is part of showing up prepared.

Step 4: Treat Early Access as Your Competitive Scrim Block

The early access period from August 6–10 for pre-order players on Xbox or Steam and Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscribers is not just a sneak peek; it is a live-fire scrim block before the wider open beta from August 13–17. You get Horde Siege with one map, two Invasion bosses, four classes capped at level 10, and 4v4 Versus with two PvP modes and two maps, plus all weapons and five medals to unlock. That is more than enough content to stress-test your setup and your play. If your beta sessions are spent wrestling random crashes you could have prevented with proper drivers, BIOS toggles, and sane frame rate settings, you are throwing away free practice.

On Xbox, you are not exempt from troubleshooting. Series S players in Quality mode may hit performance hitches after long Horde Siege runs and are advised to fully quit and restart the game to restore normal performance. That sounds trivial, but it is the difference between a smooth next session and blaming the netcode. In short: treat configuration as part of your warm-up routine. If you want Gears E-Day to feel competitive now and not “beta jank,” your preparation between matches matters as much as your reaction time during them.
