According to Google, files shared this way don’t have to travel up to the internet and back down again, making transfers faster and more efficient in many cases. Google’s Answer to AirDrop Expands Across Devices and Brands
Quick Share has effectively become Google’s answer to AirDrop, and the company is pushing it in two directions: deeper platform integration and broader hardware support. On compatible Android phones, Quick Share is already interoperable with AirDrop-like features, with support rolling out across brands such as Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi and HONOR. Even when a device lacks the required hardware for AirDrop compatibility, users can still access Quick Share by generating a QR code that shares files via the cloud, including to iOS devices. These cloud-based transfers are end-to-end encrypted and available for up to 24 hours, without consuming personal Google Drive storage. At the same time, Google is ensuring Quick Share on Android can talk to ChromeOS and Windows PCs, building an ecosystem where phones, tablets and laptops participate in the same secure device connectivity layer.
Why In-App Quick Share Matters for Secure, Local Connectivity
Embedding Quick Share into WhatsApp is about more than convenience; it’s about extending secure device connectivity into the apps people use most. Google has confirmed that Quick Share inside third-party apps can interoperate with native Quick Share on Android, ChromeOS and Windows, creating a unified path between in-app sharing and system-level transfers. When hardware AirDrop compatibility isn’t available, WhatsApp becomes a fallback channel for local, peer-to-peer file transfers that avoid unnecessary trips through the cloud. However, there is a limitation: interoperability with native Quick Share still requires Google Mobile Services, meaning some Android variants won’t benefit fully.
