From Evidence Review to Drafting: Redefining Relativity’s Role
Relativity’s acquisition of Gavel and the rollout of Relativity aiR Assist together mark a shift from a standalone e-discovery platform into a broader legal AI document automation environment that connects evidence review, document drafting and strategy inside one workflow. Relativity, long known for RelativityOne, has bought Gavel, a document automation and AI drafting company founded by litigator-turned-entrepreneur Dorna Moini. The deal lets Relativity extend its legal data platform into Microsoft Word, the place where most legal documents are written, edited and finalized. Work product generated in RelativityOne and via Relativity aiR tools can now be opened, redlined and completed in Word while staying synced to the underlying matter. Relativity describes this as taking the “system of action that lawyers already rely on” and extending it into the surfaces where they do daily work, closing the gap between evidence management and drafting.
Gavel’s Evolution and Why It Matters for Legal Automation
Gavel arrives at Relativity with a long history in document automation and rules-based workflows. Launched in 2017 as HelpSelf Legal and later rebranded as Documate, the platform grew from a “TurboTax for domestic violence survivors” into a no-code engine used by legal aid organizations, courts, law firms and legal product builders. In early 2023 it became Gavel, reflecting customer demand for full, end-to-end legal products rather than single-document tools. Gavel’s recent releases show why it fits Relativity’s strategy. Gavel Exec, first launched as a Word-based assistant, offers contract review and drafting grounded in firm playbooks and precedent. Gavel Workflows reaffirmed that “not every legal document should be created by AI,” emphasizing that known-structure documents are better suited to rules-based automation. By April, Gavel reported use by nearly 2,000 legal organizations in 28 countries, with web-based contract review, batch analysis and hybrid search that now strengthen Relativity’s expanding platform.
aiR Assist General Availability: Native AI Inside RelativityOne
On the AI side, Relativity has announced general availability of aiR Assist and new custom analyses in Relativity aiR for Review, both becoming standard in RelativityOne. aiR Assist lets legal teams ask plain-language questions of their data and receive precise, cited answers, helping them find key facts and shape strategy as soon as data enters the system. The company says aiR Assist can handle up to 300,000 documents per index and 1.5 million documents per workspace. Custom analyses expand aiR for Review by allowing teams to define and scale their own document review analyses across millions of documents. According to Relativity CEO Phil Saunders, aiR Assist and custom analyses are meant to make RelativityOne “the single, auditable source of truth for every piece of data in your matter,” with outputs that remain defensible before courts, regulators or boards.
Competing in Legal AI Document Automation and Drafting
Together, the Gavel acquisition and aiR Assist rollout move Relativity into direct competition in the legal AI drafting and automation space. RelativityOne already anchors many litigation and investigations as an e-discovery platform; adding native AI review, question-answering and Word-based drafting turns it into a more complete legal tech solution for both evidence and work product. Lawyers can keep motions, briefs and contracts tied to the same matter data that informed them, rather than letting drafts drift into disconnected document stores. Relativity plans to keep Gavel operating while integrating its capabilities, supported by the Gavel team, including founder Dorna Moini and CTO Pierre Martin. For customers, the appeal is a single environment where legal AI document automation, case strategy tools like aiR for Case Strategy and drafting assistance via aiR Assist all connect. That tight integration could become a deciding factor as legal teams compare next-generation AI tools.
