Apple describes its Apple Foundation Models as the engine behind Apple Intelligence features, from smarter photo editing to natural language automation in Shortcuts and Safari extension creation. These models support multimodal understanding of text, images, and voice, giving Siri AI the ability to answer questions about emails, photos, or content on screen and then act across apps. Yet many capabilities mirror what Google’s Gemini-powered Android devices already offer, such as context-aware assistance and natural language development flows. Privacy-First On-Device AI and the Child Safety Overhaul
Where Apple does try to stand apart is in its privacy-first AI architecture and a renewed focus on families. Apple Intelligence is designed so many tasks run on-device, with Private Cloud Compute handling larger workloads while aiming to keep user data secure. This helps Apple position Siri AI as powerful but less intrusive, in contrast to rivals that lean more on centralised cloud processing. Alongside the AI overhaul, Apple announced one of its most extensive child safety updates yet. A redesigned Screen Time experience builds on the Child Account system, giving parents more control over app access, web content filtering, and media restrictions. New Ask to Browse tools require parental approval for new websites in Safari, and stronger communication controls mean parents can approve contacts before children use Messages, FaceTime, or Phone, aligning Apple’s AI story with digital wellbeing rather than pure productivity.
Analyst Skepticism, Staggered Rollout, and the Stakes for Apple AI
Analyst reaction so far is cautiously optimistic, with enthusiasm tempered by Apple’s track record. The first iteration of Apple Intelligence was so underwhelming that it triggered a lawsuit claiming Apple overstated Siri’s new capabilities and used them to drive device sales. Leadership changes followed, and this WWDC26 push is framed as a “do or die” moment for Apple AI. Crucially, many headline Siri AI features are not arriving immediately: some high-end on-device AI functions require newer hardware like iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPad M4, or Mac M3 with 12GB of memory, and broader availability stretches into Q3 2026.
