BMW’s Neue Klasse platform is the foundation for its latest BMW electric SUV models, and it is being positioned as more than a tech upgrade; it is the architecture that ties performance, digital features and sustainability into one story. The iX3 is the first example of this second wave of Neue Klasse models, and it uses an 800-volt system that supports up to 400kW fast-charging while running a high-powered ‘superbrain’ computing setup. That technical package matters because faster charging and smarter energy management can reduce real-world emissions over a car’s life by keeping drivers on clean electricity more of the time. Recycled materials automotive strategy: the iX5 as proof of concept
Where the iX3 leans on platform technology, the iX5 shows how recycled materials automotive practices can cut emissions long before driving starts. BMW has applied detailed life-cycle analysis to the new X5, focusing on decarbonising the entire production process, including suppliers. The company says efforts during product development have reduced CO2-equivalent emissions by around 40% before the car turns a wheel. Overall, around one-third of an iX5 60 xDrive is made from secondary raw materials – about 940kg of its mass. Heavy-duty steel and aluminium components such as body structures, wheel rims and axle supports are produced using renewable energy. “Around half of the steel used in the X5’s body is electric arc furnace steel, which includes a high proportion of recycled material and is produced using renewable energy”.

Batteries, emissions and the pre-drive carbon advantage
BMW is frank that cutting tailpipe emissions is only part of the job; sustainable car manufacturing means attacking embedded carbon in batteries as well as bodywork. For the iX5 60 xDrive, BMW says that compared with the Gen5 battery used in the iX, CO2-equivalent emissions have been reduced by around 28% per watt-hour of battery capacity. That sort of number matters because it shifts the debate from “EV versus combustion” to “which EV adds the least CO2 before it leaves the factory?”. BMW estimates that a new iX5 60 xDrive should achieve a CO2e advantage over a comparable combustion engine after around one to two years of use. In other words, the emissions payback period is shortening. This pre-drive advantage might become as important a spec as 0–100km/h or range for informed buyers.
Why BMW’s sustainability gamble could reshape the electric SUV race
BMW is betting that the next battleground for electric SUVs will be how clean they are before you hit the start button. Sustainable car manufacturing is turning into a competitive differentiator, not a marketing afterthought. Buyers who care about climate impact should demand this level of transparency from every brand, not reward those who treat “green” as an optional package.
