What Director Plus Is and Why It Matters
Magewell’s Director Plus is a broadcast-grade, all-in-one video system that combines portable 4K production, live switching, IP video inputs and 5G video streaming into a single unit designed for field and event workflows. Positioned as the third product in the Director line, it builds on earlier models with expanded HDMI I/O, more IP sources and higher frame-rate support. The system is aimed at creators who want portable 4K production without hauling a rack of separate switchers, encoders and streaming devices. Director Plus targets sports, worship, medical, corporate, education and podcast productions that need multi-camera flexibility on the road. Its arrival at InfoComm 2026 underlines how mobile production equipment is shifting from piecemeal rigs to integrated platforms, reducing setup time and complexity while keeping professional features like telestration, instant replay and multi-screen outputs within a compact footprint.
From Director to Director Plus: A Bigger All-in-One Platform
Director Plus extends Magewell’s Director family into more demanding portable 4K production scenarios by lifting the ceiling on inputs and formats. It offers four HDMI inputs and two USB inputs, plus support for up to ten live IP video inputs, including SRT, RTMP, RTSP, NDI High Bandwidth and NDI HX3 streams. HTML web pages, file-based media and mobile cameras can all feed into the same workflow. According to Magewell, Director Plus can mix up to six 4K/60 sources or as many as 16 1080p60 HD sources at once. That density, combined with compositing tools, telestration and instant replay, brings capabilities usually associated with fixed control rooms into a portable chassis. For many medium-sized events, this means one all-in-one video system can now replace a traditional chain of switchers, replay decks and IP gateways, trimming equipment lists and transport costs.
5G and IP Integration Reshape Remote Streaming Economics
What makes Director Plus stand out in mobile production equipment is how deeply it integrates IP and wireless connectivity. The unit includes an integrated 5G modem, Wi-Fi and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, with the ability to aggregate connections so it can receive and transmit multiple network streams over mixed links. This matters for 5G video streaming from venues where wired bandwidth is limited or unreliable. By supporting NDI HX3 on both input and output, plus common streaming protocols, Director Plus lets crews pull in remote cameras, contribution feeds and graphics systems over IP without extra converters. Amy Zhou, sales director at Magewell, states that Director Plus delivers “the highest possible signal counts and quality at an affordable cost” while keeping the familiar reliability and ease of use of earlier models. Fewer external encoders and bonding units mean lower capital and operational complexity for remote teams.
Portable 4K Production for Events, Classrooms and Beyond
Director Plus is designed for on-the-go teams that need to move between stadiums, houses of worship, lecture halls and corporate venues. Its 7-inch touchscreen provides local control, while the free Director Utility mobile app and API/plugins extend operation to tablets, phones and third-party systems. For event producers, this means a single portable 4K production rig can handle multi-camera IMAG, confidence monitors and simultaneous streaming without extra control surfaces. Education and enterprise users can use the same box for hybrid classes, town halls or internal broadcasts by combining HDMI cameras, USB sources and IP video inputs like remote presenters. By debuting at InfoComm 2026, Magewell signals that integrated mobile production solutions have moved from niche to mainstream demand. Director Plus aligns with a wider shift toward IP-first, cloud-aware workflows that still depend on reliable, self-contained systems in the field.
