The next generation must prove that Samsung still defines premium Android smartwatch features, not just follows them.
Battery Life: The Deal-Breaker for Galaxy Watch Performance
For most Android users, Galaxy Watch performance now starts with a simple question: how often do I need to charge this thing? The Galaxy Watch 8 lasted 26 hours between charges in testing, roughly just over a day with the always-on display enabled. Meanwhile, the Pixel Watch 4 stretched to 56 hours and the OnePlus Watch 3 hit a massive 98 hours. When your competitors give you two to four days of battery life, a one-day watch feels outdated. Multi-day battery life or faster charging—ideally both—would go a long way toward making the newest Galaxy Watch model worth the upgrade. Samsung’s teasers promising “all-new internal components” and a “brand-new processor” hint at efficiency gains that must translate into real usage, not marketing copy. If Samsung cannot deliver a watch that makes battery anxiety disappear, many Android buyers will look elsewhere and never come back.

Health Monitoring: From Gimmick to Daily Lifeline
If Samsung wants the Galaxy Watch to be a serious health tool, its smartwatch health monitoring features must be convenient, not a chore. Samsung recently added a blood pressure monitoring feature to Galaxy Watches in the US, but it requires calibration with a separate cuff and regular recalibration. Taking a blood pressure reading with a smartwatch would be handy, but not if it requires a separate device that does the same thing. Most people will not jump through hoops for a feature that should feel seamless. Add that to stronger heart metrics and reliable oxygen data, and the Galaxy Watch upgrades could turn it into a health companion, not just a notification screen.
Durability and AI Coaching: Matching Apple and Google
On the hardware side, the expected Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 must evolve past “tough enough for daily life” into a tool for serious outdoor and water use. The current Ultra already carries IP68 protection, MIL-STD-810H certification, and 10ATM water resistance, allowing submersion to around 328 feet in calm fresh or salt water. Still, support for scuba diving and high-pressure water activities would help the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 stand out from its predecessor and catch up to its main competition. Samsung has teased that it is built for “ocean diving,” which is the right ambition if it wants to challenge dedicated outdoor watches. On the software side, Samsung introduced AI-powered Running Coach and Sleeping Coach on the Galaxy Watch 8, but Google has since rolled out a Gemini-based Health Coach that offers highly personalized fitness plans. Google charges a premium for its Health Coach, so Samsung has a clear opening: deliver comparable AI fitness coaching for free and across more activities, not only running and sleep.

The heart of Galaxy Watch performance is overdue for surgery. The Exynos W1000 processor in both the Galaxy Watch 8 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra is more than a couple of years old now. When you combine an aging chip with modest battery life, you get a watch that feels behind the curve on both speed and stamina. Samsung’s teasers mentioning a “brand-new processor” and “all-new internal components” raise expectations that this generation is not a minor tweak but a real redesign. A faster, more efficient chip could help with the battery life issue and enable faster response times for advanced AI processing. That is exactly what users now demand from Android smartwatch features: instant responses, smart coaching, and reliable health tracking, all without living next to a charger.
