What Final Fantasy VII Revelation Is and Why It Matters
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy, a large-scale open world RPG conclusion in which Cloud Strife and his allies attempt to stop Sephiroth and the falling Meteor while players explore the entire planet, experiment with an expanded hybrid combat system, and see 30 years of Final Fantasy VII storytelling reach a planned finale. Announced as the closer at Summer Game Fest Live, Final Fantasy VII Revelation serves as both the narrative capstone to the Remake saga and a celebration of the original game’s legacy. Producer Yoshinori Kitase describes the project as the culmination of his “emotions spanning thirty years working on this title,” inviting players to “step inside and memorialize this journey” so that a new legend can be born. For long-time fans, the promise is clear: this is where all threads converge.

Spring 2027 Release and Bold Multi-Platform Strategy
Square Enix has set a Spring 2027 release window for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, aligning the finale with the 30th anniversary year of the original Final Fantasy VII. In a major shift from past entries in the FF7 Remake trilogy, Revelation will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC. According to Square Enix’s announcement at Summer Game Fest Live, this marks the first time a core Remake entry arrives day one on Xbox and Nintendo hardware alongside PlayStation. Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the synchronized launch during the on-stage reveal with Vincent Valentine’s English voice actor Matt Mercer. The strategy signals a broader audience target for the series finale, positioning Revelation as a shared, cross-platform moment rather than a staggered, platform-led release.

Story Stakes: Meteor, Sephiroth and the Theme of Resolve
Narratively, Final Fantasy VII Revelation picks up after a devastating loss, with the party grieving a fallen ally as Sephiroth edges closer to godhood. Cloud and his companions take to the skies aboard the Highwind, racing to stop Meteor, described as the ultimate destructive magic, from obliterating the planet. The conflict is portrayed as global and urgent, with enormous Weapons roaming and multiple crises erupting at once. Producer Yoshinori Kitase frames Revelation around the theme of “resolve,” explaining that Cloud and his allies will confront their convictions on the road to the final battle that determines the planet’s fate. Player decisions across this journey can affect aspects of the characters’ stories, suggesting a more reactive narrative structure. It positions the finale not only as a retelling of familiar beats, but as a reflection on what the Remake series has added to the mythos.

A World Without Boundaries: Highwind Exploration and Open-World Design
Revelation’s biggest structural change is its open world RPG approach to the entire planet. The Reveal Trailer shows the Highwind acting as a fully controllable airship from which the party can explore a world “without boundaries.” Players can fly across the globe and drop in via parachute to almost any region, moving seamlessly from air to land. This freedom underpins a more open progression model. With Meteor falling and Weapons active, conflicts break out across multiple regions, and the party will need to divide and conquer. Players choose where to go, who to help and in what order, as the world itself fights for survival. Technobezz notes three highlighted zones: the tropical Mideel archipelago, the ninja-influenced Wutai region, and the frozen Northern Continent, suggesting a wide variety of biomes and questlines in the endgame sweep.
New Playable Characters and the Evolving Hybrid Battle System
Combat in Final Fantasy VII Revelation builds on the Remake series’ hybrid of real-time action and Tactical Mode, now described as “expanded and perfected” with new playable characters and abilities. Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are fully playable for the first time in the Remake saga. Vincent can transform into his Galian Beast form mid-combat, while Cid fights as a dragoon-style lancer with gap-closing strikes and sweeping area damage. They join Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie and Cait Sith to round out a large party. Revelation also introduces the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear system, or FITS. This gear-based mechanic lets players shift combat roles by equipping outfits tied to classic Final Fantasy jobs such as Warrior and Black Mage, adding another layer on top of the returning Materia system for deeper build-crafting and party experimentation.
