Apple is also using model distillation so its smaller models can learn from Gemini’s outputs over time, improving on-device performance without shipping the full giant model. The cloud side of the system will rely on Google Cloud infrastructure running Nvidia’s Blackwell B200 data center GPUs, which are built for large AI workloads with higher memory bandwidth and faster inference than the previous Hopper generation. These chips will power Gemini’s heaviest workloads for Siri, such as complex reasoning or large media processing. Apple will still push a hybrid model: iPhones, iPads, and Macs will run on-device models for speed and privacy on straightforward tasks, while difficult requests overflow to the cloud. Nvidia’s confidential computing, which encrypts data even while it is being processed, helps Apple maintain its privacy stance when Siri queries leave the device. Parts of this server-side system will continue under Apple’s Private Cloud Compute branding, despite relying on external hardware.

By building Siri AI on top of Google Gemini and running heavy workloads on Nvidia Blackwell chips in Google’s data centers, Apple is signaling that time-to-capability now outweighs the desire to own every layer. The bet is that deep integration—Siri’s access to personal context in Mail, Messages, Calendar, Photos, and Notes—will remain Apple’s differentiator, even if the core language model comes from a partner. At the same time, techniques like distillation suggest Apple is not abandoning its own models but using external AI as a teacher.
