What Apple Intelligence Is and Why Privacy Is the Starting Point
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s system-wide AI layer that runs across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, using on-device AI processing and tightly controlled cloud support so your personal data, context, and app activity can power smart features without turning into a data collection pipeline for outside servers or advertisers. Because the AI runs next to your data instead of pulling that data into a remote data center, exposure is reduced and control shifts back toward you. According to Apple’s WWDC presentations, user requests are processed on-device whenever possible, with the cloud used only when more computation is required. This limits long-term storage and broad profiling that are common with cloud-only AI platforms, where every prompt and response can become another record inside someone else’s servers.

Private Cloud Compute: When the Cloud Is Needed, Privacy Rules Apply
Not every AI task can run on your phone or laptop; complex reasoning and large workloads still need servers. Apple’s answer is Private Cloud Compute (PCC), which steps in only when on-device AI models reach their limits. PCC uses Apple-designed privacy systems so that different Apple Foundation Models, including those adapted from Google’s Gemini, can run in the cloud without exposing your personal data to human review. The system processes requests, returns a result, and deletes the data right after processing. Apple has extended PCC beyond its own data centers to some Google Cloud infrastructure while keeping the same privacy guarantees. To build trust, Apple has opened up PCC to outside scrutiny with technical disclosures, software images, transparency logs, virtual research environments, and a bug bounty program that targets PCC-related security issues and high-risk vulnerabilities.

A Smarter, Private AI Assistant: New Siri and the Foundation Models Framework
The new Siri sits on top of Apple Intelligence and the Foundation Models Framework, turning Apple’s AI layer into a private AI assistant that understands both your words and your context. Instead of juggling apps yourself, you can state an outcome—"Summarize what we discussed with the client last week and share it with the team along with the meeting schedule"—and Siri coordinates Mail, Messages, Calendar, and other apps to do the rest. This is powered by cross-app context, where Siri can see relevant emails, schedules, documents, and conversations without sending that full history to a traditional cloud AI platform. Through the Foundation Models Framework, third-party and enterprise apps, like CRM tools, can plug into this same layer. That means Siri can work with business data as well as personal information, while Apple Intelligence privacy rules and on-device AI processing still apply.
How Apple’s Privacy-First AI Differs from Cloud-Dependent Competitors
Most conventional AI platforms are built around central servers: your prompts, documents, and logs are sent to a cloud model that improves by learning from what everyone types. Apple is taking a different path. Its third-generation Apple Foundation Models are split between local AI models on devices and PCC-based server models, with a clear bias toward local processing and short-lived cloud sessions. This design turns the iPhone into an AI platform rather than an AI terminal. Data from Mail, Calendar, Photos, Notes, Contacts, and location services is combined into rich personal context, but the default is to analyze it on-device.
