Stop Your Carrier From Selling Your Location Data: Essential iPhone Settings to Change Now

Why Your Carrier Can Track You (Even If Apps Can’t)

Every time your iPhone connects to the mobile network, your carrier sees which cell towers you hit. Combined over time, this creates a precise record of where you live, work, shop, and travel. Many carriers collect this information by default and have been fined by regulators for sharing or selling highly detailed location data to third parties. The worrying part: this tracking happens independently of your app permissions. Even if you lock down every app on your phone, your carrier can still infer your movements from network connections. That’s why understanding iPhone location privacy settings is critical. Apple now offers tools that reduce how precisely your location is exposed to cellular networks. With a few quick changes, you can disable carrier tracking as much as possible, stop location data sharing for most purposes, and still keep essential services like emergency calls working.

Step 1: Audit Your iPhone Location Services

Start by tightening overall iPhone location privacy settings so apps don’t add to the data trail. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Make sure Location Services is enabled if you rely on maps or weather, then scroll through the app list. For each app, choose the least invasive option that still lets it work: Never blocks access completely; Ask Next Time or When I Share makes the app request access each time; While Using the App (or While Using the App or Widgets) limits tracking to when it is visible; Always allows constant tracking in the background and should be reserved for apps that truly need it. Watch the arrow icons next to each app: a purple arrow means recent access; a gray arrow means access in the last 24 hours. Use this to spot and rein in apps that overuse your location.

Step 2: Turn Off Precise Location for Most Apps

Even when you allow an app to use your location, it does not always need to know exactly where you are standing. Tap any app under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and look for the Precise Location toggle. When it is on, the app can see your pinpoint location, often accurate to a few meters. Turn Precise Location off, and the app only gets your approximate position, which is enough for forecasts, local news, and many shopping or social apps. Keep precise location enabled only for services that truly require it, such as navigation apps or ride-hailing tools that must find your exact pickup spot. This simple change can significantly reduce how detailed your overall location history appears, limiting what both apps and any downstream data partners can infer about your daily routines and sensitive places you visit.

Step 3: Use Limit Precise Location to Restrict Your Carrier

The most important step to disable carrier tracking is Apple’s newer Limit Precise Location control. Introduced in iOS 16.3, this setting specifically reduces how much detail your iPhone shares with cellular networks. When turned on, Apple explains that some information made available to cellular networks is limited, so your carrier may only be able to determine a less precise location instead of a highly accurate one. This helps stop location data sharing at the network level without switching off connectivity or emergency support. To find and enable this option, go to Settings, then open the relevant cellular or location privacy section, and look for Limit Precise Location. Once it is enabled, your mobile carrier privacy improves immediately, shrinking the value of any data they attempt to monetize and giving you more control over your physical movements.

Step 4: Build a Habit of Ongoing Mobile Privacy Checks

Locking down your iPhone once is not enough; new apps and system features can quietly expand tracking over time. Make a habit of revisiting Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services every month. Remove Always permissions you no longer need, switch more apps to While Using the App, and disable Precise Location wherever possible. Watch for unfamiliar apps showing frequent location access via the arrow indicators and adjust them immediately. Combined with the carrier-level Limit Precise Location toggle, these routine checks give you layered protection against both app-based tracking and network-based profiling. You retain essential functionality such as emergency services, maps, and ride-hailing, while dramatically cutting how much monetizable data flows to advertisers and data brokers. In just a few minutes, you can keep your movements yours—and not a product your carrier can sell.
