Google’s Gemini overhaul starts with a new “Neural Expressive” interface, a glossy redesign that gives the chatbot a more modern, app-like feel compared with the minimalist layouts of rivals like ChatGPT or Claude. In day-to-day use, though, the change feels more cosmetic than transformational. The layout is clean and polished, and thoughtful touches like a dedicated image-generation tab (labeled Nano Banana) make it easier to jump straight into creative work without hunting through menus. At the same time, some usability choices are puzzling. On the web, the familiar sidebar with your conversation history is gone, replaced by a separate screen you have to open just to browse past chats—one extra step you will notice if you multitask between threads. Overall, the interface refresh makes Gemini look more futuristic, but it doesn’t fundamentally improve how fast or effectively you can get work done.

Worse, usage caps are surprisingly tight: light coding work was enough to exhaust a Gemini Advanced plan’s 3.5 Flash allowance within 15 minutes, forcing a wait of several hours before the quota reset. For sustained development, that limitation undercuts the raw speed advantages.
Multimedia AI Tools: Fun, Capable, but Not a Creative Revolution
Google I/O announcements heavily highlighted Gemini’s new multimedia AI tools, promising smarter handling of text, image, and video in one place. The dedicated Nano Banana tab makes image generation feel like a first-class feature instead of an add-on, and the system can quickly spin up visuals from short prompts without much tweaking. For casual users, this is an easy way to brainstorm social posts, concept art, or thumbnails. However, the improvements so far feel incremental rather than game-changing. You still need careful prompt engineering to get highly specific results, and the tools do not yet replace specialized creative software for detailed design or video editing. Some of the flashier demos from the keynote—such as complex, agent-like multimedia workflows—either are not fully live yet or demand more setup than their “just works” marketing implies. The result is a capable, enjoyable toolkit that enhances Gemini, but doesn’t yet redefine creative pipelines.

The interface is attractive, but it doesn’t meaningfully accelerate common tasks beyond making some creative tools easier to find. 3.5 Flash delivers standout AI model performance when you need quick answers or rapid-fire coding help, yet its tendency to forget instructions and run into strict usage limits means it’s less reliable for long, complex projects. The multimedia features, meanwhile, offer a convenient all-in-one space for generating text, images, and potentially video, but they still fall short of the frictionless, autonomous assistant Google’s keynotes suggest. In everyday use, Gemini feels like a strong general-purpose assistant with pockets of genuine excellence rather than a clear leap ahead of competitors. If you already live in Google’s ecosystem, these updates make Gemini more appealing—but they don’t fully live up to the hype just yet.
