There are also 10 “premium” call ringtones and the ability to pin up to 20 chats, compared with the usual limit of three. Another perk lets you apply the same theme or alert tone across entire chat lists at once. Crucially, core functions such as end-to-end encrypted messaging, calls, video chats, and status updates remain identical for free and paid users, making this very much a visual upgrade rather than a functional one.
Cosmetics Over Core Features: Meta’s New Monetisation Strategy
WhatsApp built its reputation as a simple, free messaging tool, so a subscription tier marks a strategic pivot. Meta is explicitly framing WhatsApp Premium as an optional layer for people who want more ways to organise and personalise their experience, not as a gate to essential features. That is evident in the benefit list: accent colours, themes, custom icons, ringtones, and extra chat pins, all of which change how the app looks or feels rather than what it can do. The underlying messaging engine, encryption, voice and video calling, and group chat capabilities are unchanged. This approach contrasts with traditional software subscriptions, which usually unlock meaningful productivity or storage upgrades. Signal, iMessage, and the Question of Paying for Personalisation
Signal and Apple’s iMessage underline another problem for WhatsApp’s paid model: competitors already include meaningful customisation for free. Signal, which only recently introduced a paid tier for extended cloud backups, still lets users set custom chat wallpapers without any subscription. iMessage offers its own flavour of visual personalisation inside the Messages app, including contact photos and themed conversation backgrounds, again at no additional cost. Limited Rollout and Who, If Anyone, Should Subscribe
