What Meta’s Plus Subscriptions Are and Why They Matter
Meta’s new Plus subscriptions are paid tiers for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook that add premium customisation, analytics and creative tools on top of the existing free apps, marking a strategic shift toward subscription-based revenue instead of relying only on advertising and uncontrolled data use. Meta has confirmed WhatsApp Plus, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are rolling out to users globally on a staggered schedule, with features and availability varying by market at launch. According to Meta’s Head of Product Naomi Gleit, the Plus plans are aimed at ordinary users and do not replace Meta Verified, which continues to focus on identity verification and safety. Alongside these app-focused subscriptions, the company is also testing Meta One plans that gate advanced Meta AI capabilities behind separate monthly fees, signalling a broader move to charge for access to new AI and creator tools over time.
WhatsApp Plus Subscription: Personalisation and Chat Upgrades
The WhatsApp Plus subscription focuses on making Meta’s messaging app more personal and convenient. Paying users gain extra themes to change the look of their chats, custom ringtones so specific contacts or groups stand out, and support for more pinned chats to keep important conversations at the top of the inbox. Premium sticker packs are also part of the bundle, adding more expressive options for frequent chatters. One report notes that WhatsApp Plus is priced at around R50 a month in early markets, with Meta’s American pricing set at USD 3 (approx. RM14) per month. Meta has hinted that “more exciting features will be added over time,” so WhatsApp Plus is likely to evolve, especially as the company experiments with how much value users expect in return for a recurring fee on a previously free messaging platform.
Instagram Plus Paid Tier and Facebook Plus Premium Features
Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are pitched as creative and engagement boosters for heavy users of Meta’s social platforms. Subscribers get access to super reactions that stand out from standard emoji responses, and they can see how many people have rewatched a Story, adding a new layer of insight beyond simple view counts. They can create unlimited Story audience lists, highlight Stories once a week for extra visibility, and extend Stories beyond the usual 24 hours while seeing exactly who viewed them. For Facebook Plus, Meta also promises a mix of themes, stickers and broader profile or feed customisation options. Pricing in one early market is reported at about R65 a month, while Meta’s American pricing is USD 4 (approx. RM19) per month for each Plus version of its social apps, sitting above WhatsApp Plus on the price ladder.
Meta One and the Bigger Subscription Strategy Behind Plus
Beyond the WhatsApp Plus subscription and the Instagram Plus paid tier and Facebook Plus premium plans, Meta is building a larger subscription stack around Meta AI and professional users. The company is testing Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium for consumers who want higher computing capacity, a more advanced reasoning mode, and expanded image and video generation. It is also trialling Meta One Essential and Meta One Advanced for creators and businesses, with features such as a Verified badge, identity masking protection, priority placement in Facebook and Instagram search, and deeper analytics. According to coverage of Meta’s plans, the company estimates that charging USD 3 (approx. RM14) a month to all 3.3 billion users could mean USD 10 billion (approx. RM46.0 billion) in monthly revenue, even though such full adoption is unlikely. The broader message is clear: subscriptions are becoming a central pillar of Meta’s business model.
