The floating Copilot button did not appear by accident; it was part of a push to increase Copilot engagement in Microsoft 365. According to Digital Trends, only around 3.3% of Microsoft 365 users pay for Copilot, and the prominent Copilot Dynamic Action Button was meant to raise that number. It did increase clicks, but also triggered a wave of user backlash. Excel users in particular described the feature as “infuriating” on Microsoft’s feedback portal, since the floating button covered “valuable spreadsheet space” and lacked a clear way to disable floating buttons. How to Move or Dock the Copilot Button
Once the latest Microsoft Office updates roll out, changing the Copilot button placement is straightforward. Right-click the floating Copilot icon in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, then choose the option to move it to the ribbon. If you later decide you want the Copilot Dynamic Action Button back on-screen, you can right-click again and select “Move out of ribbon.” For those who prefer a persistent sidebar, Microsoft is keeping the docked mode as well, letting you park Copilot on the right edge instead of over your document. PCMag reports that Microsoft is also updating behavior so that, when docked, the button stays docked for the duration of your time in the document, rather than resetting each time you interact with Copilot. A Shift Toward User-Controlled AI in Office
While the update seems minor, it signals a shift in how Microsoft approaches AI in productivity tools. Katie Kivett, partner group product manager at Microsoft, acknowledged the tension, saying the company is making short-term adjustments while it works on a better long-term design for Copilot. Microsoft had been weaving Copilot buttons into many Windows 11 and Office experiences, but recent changes in apps like Notepad, Photos, and Snipping Tool suggest a slow retreat from forced AI prominence. Letting people disable floating buttons or tuck Copilot away in the ribbon shows that user-controlled AI integration is starting to matter more than raw usage metrics. As Copilot becomes more capable, the lesson from this episode is clear: AI needs to fit around existing workflows, not sit on top of them.
