The experiment currently applies to a subset of site owners and is designed as a granular, site-level consent mechanism. It sits alongside new Search Console insights that show how AI Overviews may surface content, giving publishers better visibility into how often they are appearing inside generative answers and whether that exposure translates into meaningful user visits.

Balancing AI Overviews Adoption with Publisher Traffic Concerns

With AI Overviews now used by billions of searchers each month, publishers face a trade-off: appear in AI summaries that may answer user questions on the page or opt out and rely on classic blue links. Google is trying to soften that tension by updating AI Overviews and AI Mode with more inline links, website previews, Preferred Sources and subscription labels that highlight where information comes from and encourage deeper clicks. The company has also issued guidance on unique content, page experience and high-quality images and video to help sites stand out. Still, many creators remain unsure whether richer summaries will reduce click-through rates over time. The new Search Console controls do not solve that uncertainty, but they at least turn passive participation into an active decision, which may ease some of the frustration among wary publishers.

Concerns about AI search are not only about traffic; they also center on reliability and reputation.
