Google Targets Phone Fraud With Verified Financial Calls

Google is rolling out a flagship Android scam call blocking feature designed to tackle one of the most costly forms of fraud: spoofed banking calls. Phone spoofing, where scammers fake a trusted caller ID using internet-based systems, is estimated to drive around USD 950 million (approx. RM4.37 billion) to USD 980 million (approx. RM4.51 billion) in losses annually. To curb this, Android’s new verified financial calls system checks incoming calls that claim to be from a bank or financial institution against the official app installed on the device. If the app confirms that no call is being placed, Android will automatically terminate the connection, often before the phone even rings. The feature is part of a broader wave of Android security features focused on proactive, automatic protection that does not depend on users spotting red flags in real time.

How Verified Financial Calls Work Behind the Scenes

Verified financial calls essentially turn your bank’s own app into a live authenticity checker for incoming calls. When a call appears with your bank’s name or number, Android quietly sends a verification request to the bank’s app, provided it is installed and you are signed in. The app responds whether it is actively placing a call. If it is not, Android treats the call as a likely spoof and hangs up automatically, providing robust spoofed call protection without any user action. Banks can also flag certain numbers as inbound-only, so any outbound call appearing from those numbers is blocked by default. The rollout starts on Android 11 and newer, initially working with Revolut, Itaú, and Nubank, with more partners expected over time. This approach shifts the burden of verification from the user to a cryptographic, app-to-system handshake.

Part of 12 New Android Security Features That Block Threats Automatically

Verified financial calls sit within a broader set of 12 new Android security upgrades focused on automatic threat blocking. The philosophy is clear: stop fraud and malware before users have to make a security decision. Chrome on Android now scans APK downloads with Safe Browsing, blocking known malicious packages before they reach storage. Live Threat Detection, powered by on-device AI, watches how apps behave after installation and can flag suspicious behavior such as silent SMS forwarding, abuse of accessibility overlays, or apps that hide their icons to operate in the background. Android scam call blocking is complemented by features that automatically hide one-time passwords from most apps for several hours, limiting the window for interception. Together, these Android security features aim to reduce the most common routes attackers use to steal money, access accounts, or plant spyware.

Android 17 and 2026 Updates: Stronger AI, Scam, and Theft Protections

From Android 17 onwards, Google is layering in more intelligent defenses that work alongside verified financial calls. Dynamic signal monitoring will allow Live Threat Detection to observe app–system interactions in real time and receive updated detection rules as new attack patterns emerge, helping Android respond quickly to evolving malware and fraud techniques. Advanced Protection mode is being hardened further by restricting accessibility services to apps explicitly labeled as accessibility tools, disabling device-to-device unlocking, and adding scam detection for chat notifications. Theft protections are also expanding, with default-on features like Remote Lock, Theft Detection Lock, and a strengthened Mark as lost flow that requires biometrics and restricts quick settings and connectivity. Intrusion Logging creates encrypted forensic records to help high-risk users and investigators understand sophisticated attacks. Collectively, these updates push Android toward a more proactive, always-on security posture.
