What the New WhatsApp Cutoff Means

Meta reviews WhatsApp’s minimum software requirements every year to keep pace with security patches and modern features. This time, the focus is on raising the iOS minimum requirement slightly and stepping up the Android baseline by a full generation. While the change will not hit all users equally, it will be especially important for people who rely on older hardware as their primary communication tool. The deadlines are set for September and November 2026, giving users more than a year to prepare.
iPhone Users: iOS 15.5 Becomes the Minimum
On iPhone, WhatsApp iOS support ending means the app will require iOS 15.5 or newer starting November 30, 2026. Meta is raising the bar from the current iOS 15.1 minimum, but this change is relatively gentle. All iPhones that can run iOS 15.1 can also install iOS 15.5 or later, so no supported model is being cut off entirely. Older devices such as the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, first‑generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and 7 Plus are affected because they are often still on earlier software. These phones can be upgraded up to iOS 15.8.8, which keeps them above the new iOS 15.5 minimum requirement. To stay within WhatsApp device compatibility, users should head to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available iOS well before the deadline.
Android Users Face a Stricter WhatsApp Requirement
For Android owners, the shift is more dramatic. From September 8, 2026, WhatsApp Android 6 requirement rules will apply, and the app will no longer support Android versions older than 6.0 Marshmallow. Meta is moving the minimum from Android 5.0 to Android 6.0, which means some older phones will not qualify for an update that keeps WhatsApp running. Users can check their current version by opening Settings and scrolling to About phone. If the phone supports it, updating through Settings > System > Software updates should bring the OS to Android 6.0 or newer, preserving WhatsApp access. However, some models will not offer any update beyond Android 5.0. In those cases, users will need to switch to a newer device if they want to keep using WhatsApp as a daily messenger.
