What Gemini’s Gmail Integration in Drive Does

Gemini’s Gmail integration in Google Drive is a feature that lets you add specific email threads as sources so the AI can search your Gmail, understand your conversations, and combine them with Drive files to give more accurate, context-aware answers and summaries. Instead of treating Gmail and Drive as separate silos, Gemini now pulls cross-app context from both, turning them into one searchable workspace. In Drive, Ask Gemini already reads files and folders to answer questions, organize documents, or summarize content. With Gmail added, it can also see the discussions, decisions, and attachments behind those files. This is especially helpful for long projects where key details are scattered across documents and email chains. The result is more reliable Google Drive AI features, from AI-powered email summaries to cross-app context search that reflects how work actually happens.

How to Add Gmail Threads to Ask Gemini in Drive

To start using Gmail threads with Ask Gemini in Drive, open Drive on desktop and click the Gemini button in the top-right corner. This opens the chat interface and a sidebar where you can set sources for the conversation. In the sidebar, click Add to choose what Gemini should reference. Alongside files and folders, you’ll now see an Add from Gmail option. Select this and a search bar appears so you can find specific email threads by keyword, such as a project name or client. Pick one or more threads, then click Add in the bottom-right corner to include them as sources. From that point, Gemini can draw on both Drive documents and those selected Gmail conversations when answering questions, generating summaries, or explaining decisions buried in your inbox.

Practical Ways to Use Cross-App Context Search

Once Gmail threads are added as sources, Gemini can connect information across apps in ways that reduce switching and manual searching. For example, you can open a project folder in Drive, add the related email discussion, and ask Gemini for an AI-powered email summary combined with document highlights. Travel planning is another straightforward use case: add brochures or itineraries stored in Drive, then include booking-confirmation emails from Gmail so Gemini can assemble a single, coherent trip plan. In workplace scenarios, Gemini can summarise lengthy email threads, surface agreed actions, and cross-check them against meeting notes or proposals in Drive. This cross-app context search helps you see the full story behind a project—what was discussed, what was decided, and where the supporting files live—without manually piecing it all together.

Who Can Use It and What to Know About Privacy

The new Gemini Gmail integration in Drive is currently available to eligible Google Workspace users and paying Google AI subscribers, including Google AI Pro and Ultra plans, on the desktop version of Drive. According to Digital Trends, the rollout began on June 3, 2026 and may take up to 15 days to reach all supported accounts. Administrators must have Gemini for Workspace in Drive turned on, and end users need Workspace smart features enabled to access Ask Gemini in Drive. Google says the feature only works when you explicitly add Gmail threads as sources, which means Gemini does not scan your entire inbox by default. You decide which conversations the AI can use, so you can keep sensitive or unrelated emails out of your AI-powered workplace insights while still benefiting from richer, cross-app answers.
