From Living Room Console to Go-Anywhere Machine
For years, hardware modder TERA wrestled with a simple frustration: a PlayStation 5 delivers stunning games, but it is tied to the living room. Earlier, he had already built a massive portable PS5, nearly five kilograms with an oversized screen and less than an hour of battery life. That experiment proved the concept, but it was too bulky to carry or store comfortably. The latest build tackles the same ambition with a radically different goal: a portable PS5 mod that slips into most laptop bags while preserving the full console experience. TERA started by disassembling a used PS5, keeping the more compact motherboard and discarding the rest. That smaller board opened up new layout options and enabled a laptop form factor console design. The result is an all-in-one custom gaming device that looks like a chunky notebook but plays native PS5 titles without compromise.
Cooling a 200-Watt Beast in a Laptop Form Factor
Shrinking a desktop-class system into a laptop-style shell immediately raised the hardest problem: heat. The PS5’s main processor can draw close to 200 watts under load, and early tests with the stock cooling solution quickly led to thermal warnings within minutes. To keep performance stable, TERA adopted a server-grade vapor-chamber heatsink designed to move large amounts of heat efficiently. A custom 3D-printed mount secures the chamber over the processor, supplemented by added heat pipes and aluminum bars that pull warmth away from nearby components. Liquid metal thermal compound improves heat transfer from the chip, with a protective coating applied around it to prevent electrical shorts. Even the fan became a bespoke part: an off-the-shelf unit was cut down, given a freshly printed housing and new blades, and paired with a temperature sensor plus control circuit so fan speed automatically scales with real-time thermals, visible on a dedicated display.
Power, Noise, and the Quest for a Clean All-in-One Console
Power delivery was the next bottleneck for turning the PS5 into a self-contained laptop form factor console. Rather than rely on a bulky external adapter, TERA integrated a modified server power supply directly inside the chassis. This choice preserved the all-in-one feel of a true portable PS5 mod while keeping the system robust under heavy loads. Custom timing boards ensure that the screen and fan stay completely off until the main power button is pressed, preventing unwanted power draw in standby. During early tests, video interference appeared on the display, so a small copper plate tied to ground was added to scrub out that noise. Together, these tweaks show how much of the project is about refinement: not just making the console technically portable, but creating a custom gaming device that feels polished, quiet, and reliable when opened up like a high-performance notebook.
Display, Chassis Design, and Battery Experiments
To complete the handheld gaming mod feel without sacrificing usability, TERA chose a 15.6-inch Sharp LCD panel. It is smaller than the screen used in the earlier, bulkier build, but its glossy surface delivers vivid colors while trimming weight and thickness. Around it, TERA 3D-printed multiple plastic parts for the outer shell, integrating ventilation slits along the sides and even a sturdy metal handle for easier transport. The display is secured with double-sided tape, while precisely cut spacers hold the back panel in place, giving the device a tidy, laptop-like finish. Battery life remains experimental: using a compact RC car battery pack wired directly, the unit can currently run a PlayStation 4 game for about 30 minutes, with demanding PS5 titles draining it faster. However, the internal architecture already anticipates a detachable battery pack, hinting at future revisions with more practical untethered playtime.
