Reports say Samsung Electronics President Roh Tae-moon will visit BOE in late June to discuss expanded cooperation on smartphone and TV displays, with BOE treating the Galaxy S27 opportunity as a “gift” it hopes to secure. For consumers, the core question is whether cost savings on the display can be achieved without sacrificing the hallmark brightness, color accuracy, and reliability that have defined Samsung’s flagship screens so far.

Why Samsung Is Considering BOE OLED Panels Now
Samsung has historically reserved its own Samsung Display partnership for flagships, while using BOE OLED panels and other third-party screens in budget and mid-range phones. That line is now blurring. With memory chip prices rising sharply, Samsung is looking to offset higher component costs by reducing the bill of materials for the base Galaxy S27 model. According to ETNews, the company has already requested technical information from BOE for the relevant OLED panel. If approved, this would be the first time a flagship Galaxy S-series phone uses a Chinese-made OLED panel on its base variant. BOE, for its part, wants to prove its OLED screen quality on top-tier devices from global brands and expand beyond its current customers, which already include major notebook and smartphone makers. The result is a deal driven by mutual need: Samsung wants lower costs, BOE wants flagship validation.

Quality Risks: Green Lines and Brand Reputation
The biggest concern around BOE OLED panels in a Samsung Galaxy S27 display is long-term reliability, especially the risk of green display lines that can appear after months of use. Wccftech notes that BOE’s OLEDs have been linked to these unsightly artifacts, raising questions about consistency versus Samsung Display’s mature technology. For a flagship, any widespread defect would be damaging: consumers expect uniform brightness, consistent color, and durable OLED screen quality across all units, not a lottery based on panel supplier. At the same time, BOE is not an untested minor player. The company reportedly controls around 25 percent of the global display panel market, with revenue near USD 30 billion (approx. RM138 billion), and supplies LTPS OLED panels for several iPhone models. The real test will be whether BOE can match Samsung Display’s standards under Samsung’s tighter quality control and calibration.
Inside BOE’s New Gen 8.6 OLED Capacity and What It Means
BOE’s manufacturing readiness is a key reason this Samsung Display partnership shift is even possible. In mid-June, BOE held a ceremony to mark mass production and customer shipments at its Gen 8.6 OLED line in Chengdu. The line, backed by a total investment of 63 billion yuan, is one of the first Gen 8.6 OLED facilities globally to reach volume production, with a monthly capacity of 32,000 substrates. Today this plant focuses on OLED panels for notebooks and tablets, such as a 14-inch 2.8K OLED for Lenovo, but it also showcases technology that matters for phones: LTPO backplanes, tandem OLED structures, and AI-driven defect and yield management. Even if the Galaxy S27 uses a different line, this demonstrates BOE’s ability to scale advanced OLED manufacturing, which strengthens its case as a viable supplier for future Samsung smartphones and IT products.
A New Era of Supply Diversification for Samsung
If the base Galaxy S27 moves to BOE OLED panels, it would mark a major shift in Samsung’s long-standing vertical integration strategy, where Samsung Display has supplied most flagship screens. At the same time, Samsung is also exploring renewed LCD purchases from BOE for TVs now that past patent disputes have been resolved. That means the relationship could span smartphones and televisions, tightening BOE’s role in Samsung’s display supply chain while reducing Samsung’s dependence on its own display arm. For buyers, the outcome will likely be a split world: premium Galaxy S27 variants may keep Samsung Display panels, while the base model relies on BOE to keep prices from rising.
