These systems exploit our tendency to bond with anything that seems to respond to us—from fictional characters to pets—to create sticky engagement that can slide into AI emotional attachment, dependence, and confusion about what kind of relationship is even possible. The right response is not moral panic but honesty. AI companions should be treated as powerful media experiences that can be useful, entertaining, and sometimes comforting, but never as replacements for human care, friendship, or therapy. Clear labeling, clinical oversight when mental health is involved, and realistic expectations are non-negotiable. If we keep letting pattern-matching tools masquerade as understanding minds, the cost will fall on the most vulnerable users first—and on the rest of us, one attachment at a time.
