Screen time management gets a major upgrade with Time Allowances, which replace one-size-fits-all daily limits with category-specific budgets. Parents can assign different time amounts to Games, Social Media, Entertainment, or other app groups and see usage in a live Screen Time dashboard. They can pause devices during meals, grant temporary extensions, or enable unlimited use when needed, all from shortcuts at the top of the screen. Apple says these recommendations are tailored to a child’s age and were developed with guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which is adapting its Family Media Plan into a product-specific guide. Alongside time controls, Communication Safety expands beyond nudity detection to automatically blur or block gore and violent media shared in Messages and FaceTime for users under 18, adding a second layer of content protection that goes beyond traditional app ratings or web filters.
Child Accounts, Contact Controls, and Communication Safety
Child accounts are now the backbone of iOS 27 child safety. Required for kids under 13 and available up to age 18, they let parents set age-appropriate defaults during device setup, including App Store restrictions, media ratings, and automatic limits on adult websites. Families can start younger children with a small set of essential apps and gradually expand access as they mature, even converting existing devices into child accounts. Contact controls extend oversight to communication: parents can approve who kids can call, message, or FaceTime, and can require approval before new contacts are added. Communication Safety, previously focused on nudity, now also screens for violent or gory images and videos and can blur or block them for minors. Together, these tools shift parental controls from a single Screen Time menu into everyday flows across Safari, Messages, FaceTime, and Phone.
