Dan Clark Audio AEON Core: Efficient Planar for Everyday Rigs

The Dan Clark Audio AEON Core is a closed-back planar headphone that replaces the AEON 2 and rethinks the company’s most accessible platform. Its new planar driver is engineered for higher efficiency, with a rated 17-ohm impedance and approximately 97 dB/mW sensitivity, making it far easier to power from portable DAC/amps and capable dongles. Dan Clark specifies that the AEON Core is designed to work with amplifiers delivering at least 125 mW into 16 ohms, positioning it as the brand’s easiest headphone to drive so far. Tuning follows a revised Harman over-ear target developed with Dr. Sean Olive, but with slightly less energy between 100 Hz and 225 Hz than prior models to provide cleaner bass separation and a smoother handoff into the lower mids. At 328 grams and with distortion under 0.1% at 80 dB white noise, it couples long-session comfort with planar-style clarity.
