Why AI-Assisted Coding Is Now an Enterprise-Scale Business
Cursor’s trajectory explains why its acquisition commanded such a high price and why AI-assisted coding is now seen as a mainstream enterprise capability. Cursor has been one of the most closely watched names in AI development tools, raising USD 2.3 billion (approx. RM10.8 billion) last year even while still struggling to reach profitability. Its AI coding assistant reached USD 1 billion (approx. RM4.7 billion) in annualised revenue by November and surpassed USD 4 billion (approx. RM1.18 trillion), lost USD 6.35 billion (approx. RM29.8 billion) last year and lacked a serious position in developer tools. Its Grok chatbot has been hit by safety controversies, with incidents involving antisemitic responses and sexualised images that prompted all eleven co-founders to depart and forced a public reset. Grok Build 0.1, the first coding-focused model, remains in beta and carries no enterprise weight. Cursor now hands xAI a proven application layer with over a million paying users and a trusted place in developer workflows. SpaceX can rebuild xAI “from the foundations up” using Cursor as a front door for future Grok-based coding models and services.
Consolidation and Vertical Integration in AI Developer Platforms
Strategically, the deal highlights a broader shift: major platforms want tight vertical integration of AI developer platforms, from infrastructure to models to the tools engineers touch every day. Cursor was already training its Composer 2.5 models on xAI’s Colossus supercluster using more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs across 300 megawatts of capacity, which made technical integration a natural next step. Today Cursor lets teams choose between Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s GPT, and its own models, but every external API call represents spend that leaves SpaceX’s ecosystem.
