Stellantis is sharpening its strategy for autonomous vehicle software by deepening its alliance with Qualcomm while accelerating its in-house STLA Brain platform. The expanded collaboration will see Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis system-on-chips embedded across next-generation Stellantis models, underpinning cockpit, connectivity and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) performance. At the same time, STLA Brain acts as the vehicle AI platform that orchestrates these capabilities, enabling over-the-air upgrades and standardized features across brands such as Jeep, Peugeot and Maserati. This dual-track approach is designed to boost compute power and AI-driven functions without locking Stellantis into a single external software vendor. Instead, Qualcomm provides the scalable hardware and ADAS stack, including the Snapdragon Ride Pilot platform for Level 2+ hands-free autonomy and beyond, while Stellantis retains control of the core software architecture that will increasingly define how its vehicles drive, learn and interact with passengers.

Inside STLA Brain: Stellantis’s Proprietary Vehicle AI Platform
STLA Brain is Stellantis’s ambitious attempt to build a common, intelligent software foundation for its entire lineup, positioning software as the defining layer of the car. Conceived as an AI-defined vehicle OS, it is designed to simplify system integration, accelerate self-driving car development and support continuous improvement over the vehicle lifecycle. By centralizing core functions—spanning autonomous driving, safety, connectivity and cabin intelligence—STLA Brain aims to reduce complexity created by fragmented legacy architectures. Instead of hardware-specific code on dozens of control units, the platform promotes standardized interfaces and cloud-connected services that can be updated frequently. This shift allows Stellantis to roll out new autonomous features and in-vehicle experiences more quickly and consistently across brands and segments. Crucially, it keeps intellectual property and strategic control of autonomous vehicle software in-house, a direct response to the competitive pressure from Tesla’s vertically integrated Full Self-Driving stack.
Applied Intuition’s Role: Vehicle OS and Cabin Intelligence at Scale
To turn STLA Brain from strategy into shippable code, Stellantis is leaning on Silicon Valley software specialist Applied Intuition. The companies are expanding their partnership beyond the STLA SmartCockpit into the core of the vehicle AI platform. Applied Intuition will provide tools and infrastructure across software development, simulation, validation and deployment, centered on its Vehicle OS and Cabin Intelligence systems. Vehicle OS offers an AI-defined foundation that shortens development cycles and speeds time to market, while Cabin Intelligence enhances in-vehicle experiences with smarter interfaces and contextual features. For Stellantis, the benefit is the ability to design once and scale autonomous and cabin capabilities across multiple nameplates and platforms. For Applied Intuition, whose solutions already support 18 of the top 20 global automakers, the deal cements its position as a key enabler of AI-defined vehicles and large-scale self-driving car development.
Reducing AI Dependency While Keeping Hardware Partnerships
Stellantis’s latest moves highlight a nuanced strategy: reduce reliance on external AI vendors for differentiation, but keep deep relationships with hardware and tooling partners. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis and Ride Pilot ADAS platform provide the scalable compute backbone and sensor fusion needed for modern driver assistance, from active safety to Level 2+ hands-free autonomy. On top of that, STLA Brain and Applied Intuition’s Vehicle OS define how data is used, how features evolve and how the driver experiences autonomy and connectivity. Stellantis also signaled its intent to streamline its ecosystem by signing a letter of intent for its automated driving and simulation unit aiMotive to join Qualcomm, tightening integration between silicon and ADAS software. This architecture allows Stellantis to standardize hardware to cut costs, while reserving its proprietary software stack as the main lever for brand identity and innovation.
The Race with Tesla and the Future of AI-Defined Vehicles
The Stellantis–Qualcomm–Applied Intuition triangle underscores a broader industry shift: traditional automakers are racing to build internal AI platforms to challenge Tesla’s lead in autonomous driving. Tesla’s edge has long come from its tightly integrated software, continuous data-driven updates and a single global vehicle AI platform. Stellantis is now constructing a comparable model with STLA Brain, using Snapdragon-based hardware, Applied Intuition’s development infrastructure and its own software vision. The goal is to deliver smarter, safer and more intuitive vehicles at scale, with rapid rollout of new autonomous features and cabin experiences across millions of cars. As vehicles become AI-defined products, success will hinge less on mechanical differentiation and more on how quickly automakers can ship, iterate and monetize software. Stellantis’s dual-track strategy shows that legacy players are no longer content to outsource their most strategic advantage: the intelligence of the car itself.
