But the data argue for a more nuanced view: controlled exposure to diverse microbes in early life, including those from dogs, appears to help children build sturdier immune systems and need fewer antibiotics. That matters in an era of rising antimicrobial resistance and overprescribed medications. We should not romanticize dogs as miracle inhalers; another large observational study found that continuous dog exposure did not dramatically change outcomes for children with established asthma and sometimes coincided with more exacerbations. Nor can current research prove causation; it highlights powerful associations and a promising direction for further work. Still, the balance of evidence now favors this conclusion: for many families, a well-cared-for dog is not a health risk to children, but a living, furry ally in pet immunity development and healthier childhoods.
