Microsoft 365 Education AI refers to a growing set of artificial intelligence teaching tools, including planning, assessment, and study features, that are built directly into familiar Microsoft classroom apps such as Teams, Assignments, and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app to support both educators and students across everyday school tasks.
The headline story is not that Microsoft added a few clever features; it is that AI is being baked into the core workflows of teaching and learning. With its latest AI in Education Report, Microsoft shows that 92% of students and education leaders, and 88% of educators, have already used AI for school-related work. This is no fringe experiment. At the same time, 58% of education leaders say their schools are already implementing or scaling AI, while more than three quarters of leaders and educators report their AI use increased over the past year. The message is clear: the question in many schools has shifted from “Should we use AI?” to “How do we make it reliable, responsible and useful day-to-day?”
Unit Plans, Assignment Rules, and Why Teachers Finally Get a Say
Microsoft’s most important move is treating teachers as the primary users of AI, not as an afterthought. Unit Plans in Teach help educators move from an idea to a fully developed, standards-aligned unit in minutes, with global standards coverage, a built-in structure, and AI refinement through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. In other words, Unit Plans education features are designed to handle the tedious scaffolding work teachers used to do late at night, while still leaving them in charge of content and nuance.
This matters because planning is where AI can either empower or flatten teaching. By letting educators input subject, grade level, language, unit duration and context, Teach generates a multi-lesson outline with overviews, essential questions and week-by-week structure that teachers can then edit, extend and align with assessments. When that AI planning sits inside Microsoft 365 Education AI rather than on a disconnected website, it becomes part of a coherent workflow: draft in Copilot, assign via Teams, track standards in Assignments. That is how AI stops being a gimmick and starts being infrastructure.
Copilot in the Classroom: Guardrails, Not Auto-Pilots

Microsoft’s report notes that academic integrity is the leading AI concern for 41% of students and 42% of educators. When educators can tune AI expectations per assignment and even attach standards to instructions and rubrics in Teams Assignments, Copilot in classroom contexts looks less like cheating automation and more like a controlled, teachable tool—especially when paired with recurring AI skills training that educators and students say they want monthly or quarterly.
Study and Learn, Copilot Notebooks, and the New Self-Study Stack
On the student side, Microsoft is trying to prove that AI can be a study partner rather than a shortcut. The Study and Learn agent brings research-based learning directly into Copilot Chat, guiding students through concepts with interactive practice and real-time feedback instead of handing them finished answers. Study and Learn is available through Copilot Chat for students aged 13 and older at no additional cost within Microsoft 365 Education. The bet is that if AI is integrated into structured practice, it is less likely to become a backdoor for copying.
Copilot Notebooks pushes this further by letting students add lecture slides, notes, handouts and readings into a notebook, with Copilot responses grounded in those materials rather than generic web knowledge. That shift is crucial: instead of AI being a separate oracle, it becomes a lens for the content a teacher already chose. Coupled with Learning Activities—flashcards, quizzes, matching and fill-in-the-blank tasks embedded in Assignments and Classwork—and the Learning Zone environment, Microsoft is building a full AI-driven study stack inside the Microsoft 365 Education AI ecosystem, not bolted on around it.
From Experiments to Everyday Practice: What’s Next for Schools
These tools are arriving against a backdrop of widespread, often unsupervised AI use. Training is the top support educators and institutions are asking for, and 87% of educators and education leaders, along with 79% of students, say that knowing how to use AI effectively and responsibly is important for students’ futures. Microsoft’s rollout schedule—Student AI Guidelines available now, Learning Activities in July, Teach updates and grouping tools in August, Unit Plans next quarter—shows a strategy of iterating into the school year rather than dropping everything at once.
The real test will be whether these AI teaching tools reduce teacher workload without diluting professional judgment. Designed with educator feedback and grounded in learning science, the new features aim to improve outcomes, boost engagement and support critical thinking while keeping teachers in control. In practice, that means success will look ordinary: Copilot in classroom planning, Unit Plans aligned with local standards, assignment-level AI rules understood by students, and Study and Learn baked into revision habits. If that ordinary reality takes hold, Microsoft 365 Education AI will have moved AI from novelty to necessity in school life.
