Foldables stop being a curiosity
The Galaxy Z Fold 8’s record-breaking pre-orders mark the moment foldable smartphones stop being niche experiments and start behaving like mainstream upgrades, with design changes focused less on spectacle and more on daily usability, comfort, and familiarity for people who spend most of their time on a phone-sized screen rather than a tablet-sized one.
Samsung says the latest Galaxy Z Fold models are on track for the most successful Z-series pre-order cycle yet, with the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra running about 30% ahead of the previous generation. Across its latest Fold and Flip range, pre-orders are up 70% year-on-year compared with the earlier Z Fold 7 cycle, and this is the highest foldable volume the company has logged in seven years of pushing the category. In other words, Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales are not a blip; they are a trend line bending upwards. Foldable phone demand is still a small part of the overall smartphone market, but the old question of “why would anyone want this?” is starting to sound outdated.

Why the new shape unlocked demand
The core reason Z Fold 8 pre-orders exploded is not marketing hype; it is geometry. Earlier Fold models were tall and narrow when closed, clever but awkward compared with a standard phone. The Z Fold 8 flips that script with a shorter, wider “passport-sized” footprint, pairing a 5.5‑inch outer display with a 7.6‑inch inner panel using a 4:3 aspect ratio. This makes the cover display feel like a normal phone instead of a compromise you tolerate until you can open the device.
Samsung’s own numbers show the impact of this pivot. The Z Fold 8 alone accounts for nearly half of all Fold-series pre-orders and more than 40% of recent Fold and Flip orders in one major market, outshining the more extreme Fold 8 Ultra. That is a clear vote for practicality over spec-sheet bragging rights. By making the outer screen wider and more usable, Samsung cut the behavioural adjustment required to live with a foldable. People spend most of the day on that outer display, not the big unfolded screen, so fixing it was the real breakthrough.

Premium prices, record Samsung foldable records
What makes this wave of Z Fold 8 sales more striking is that it comes in spite of premium pricing. Commentators point out that foldables remain expensive, and the Fold 8 Ultra in particular has climbed even higher. Yet Samsung foldable records keep falling: total pre-orders this cycle are roughly 17% higher than any previous foldable year for the brand, and the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra together are about 30% ahead of their predecessors.
That gap between high cost and high demand suggests something important about foldable smartphone adoption. When the product feels experimental, users scrutinise every compromise. When it feels like a credible daily driver, they start weighing it like any other premium upgrade. The new design, better one-handed comfort, and a clearer value story — phone first, tablet second — appear to have tipped many long-watching customers into action. People who were waiting for foldables to feel “unquestionably mainstream” are treating the Z Fold 8 as exactly that.

Apple’s shadow and the next phase of foldable adoption
Samsung’s surge is not happening in a vacuum. The Z Fold 8 lands just as leaks and analyst reports point to Apple preparing its first foldable iPhone, expected to favour a similar wider cover display and tablet-like inner screen. Samsung appears to be staging a pre‑emptive strike: define the next chapter of foldable design before its largest rival arrives, and prove that customers already like that vision.
Whether Samsung’s lead survives Apple’s entry is another question. Apple has a track record of entering existing categories and smoothing away their remaining pain points, and its first foldable will bring new attention that could expand the whole segment. One commentator expects that by 2027 we will see many more devices experimenting with fresh formats and aspect ratios to capture a share of this growing pie. Foldable phone demand is still “a drop in the ocean” compared with slab phones, but the direction is now clear: foldables are moving toward the norm, and the Z Fold 8’s record pre-orders are the strongest signal yet.
