Microsoft ended official support for Office 2019 for Mac in October 2023, and a license-validation certificate expiring on July 13 will push the suite into “reduced functionality mode.” After that date, you can open and print documents but cannot edit, save, or create new ones, even if you try to reinstall or update Office 2019. According to Microsoft’s own documentation, this problem “cannot be resolved by updating or reinstalling Office 2019 for Mac,” so migration is now mandatory if you want ongoing editing.
Check Your Mac, iPhone, and iPad Before You Migrate

Office 2019 apps will remain installed but will drop into view‑only mode after July 13, so open your documents using the newer Office icons in the Dock or Applications folder. Office 2021 will continue receiving updates until October 13, 2026, giving you a defined support window. This route makes sense if you rely on close compatibility with existing documents and want Microsoft’s latest features rather than switching to other Mac Office alternatives.
Path 2: Use Free Microsoft 365 Web Apps on Older Macs
If your Mac cannot be upgraded beyond macOS 11 or your iPhone or iPad is stuck on iOS 16, your best Microsoft option is the free Microsoft 365 web apps. Sign into your Microsoft account in a browser, upload Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files to OneDrive, and edit them there. Microsoft confirms that when devices or apps cannot be updated, you can still “use Microsoft 365 on the web for free” to keep working on your files. For documents stored locally, copy them to a cloud service or portable drive, then open them on any compatible computer where a modern Office suite is installed. You can also email important attachments to yourself so they are easy to retrieve from another device. This approach keeps you within the Microsoft ecosystem without installing new desktop apps on unsupported hardware.
Path 3: Switch to Mac Office Alternatives and Preserve Your Data
If you prefer not to pay for another Microsoft license or subscription, consider Mac Office alternatives that can open and edit your existing documents. Microsoft highlights that your data remains accessible and “can be accessed in a supported Microsoft 365 or Office product,” but third‑party suites can also help. Apple’s free iWork apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) and the open‑source LibreOffice import most Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. To migrate, first back up your entire Documents folder and any OneDrive or local Office 2019 folders to an external drive or cloud service. Then install your chosen alternative suite and test it with a sample of complex files, checking formatting, formulas, and fonts. Keep Office 2019 installed for viewing and printing until July 13, but shift everyday editing to the new apps so the certificate deadline cannot disrupt your work.
