It uses an octa-core CPU made up of Cortex-A725 cores in a 1+3+4 layout, with the main performance core reaching up to 3.4GHz, a Mali-G720 MC8 GPU for graphics, and the MediaTek NPU 880 for on-device AI workloads. According to MediaTek’s press information, the chip is built on a power-efficient 4nm process, aligning it with modern mid-range performance and battery expectations. The crucial difference is the integrated LLM Booster and official support for Gemini Nano V3. That combination is what turns the 8550 from a routine refresh into a gateway for advanced budget phone AI features, promising smoother, faster local language and agent tasks than earlier mid-tier chips could deliver.

Gemini Intelligence Requirements: Not Every 8550 Phone Will Qualify

Gemini Nano V3 support is necessary for Gemini Intelligence, but it is not the only requirement. Google has stated that devices need at least 12GB of RAM and a “qualified” chipset to run the full agentic AI suite, so a phone using the MediaTek Dimensity 8550 is only partway there. Some current premium models still run Gemini Nano V2 and therefore do not qualify for Gemini Intelligence, even though they use powerful processors. Meanwhile, only a handful of phones that already support Gemini Nano V3, like the latest Galaxy S26 series, Google Pixel 10 family, and OnePlus 15, can tap into the full experience. The chip’s on-device AI capabilities mean tasks like summarising content, drafting messages, and using context-aware assistants can run locally instead of relying solely on the cloud, which should improve speed and privacy. Because the 8550 shares nearly all of its physical design with the Dimensity 8500, manufacturers can adopt it without heavy re-engineering, making it easier to put agent-ready silicon into more affordable devices.
