How the Plastic Dummy Chip Scam Works
Recent reports highlight fake DDR5 SODIMM modules that, at first glance, look like high-quality laptop memory. The PCB carries what appear to be branded DRAM packages, complete with engraved markings and even power management circuitry. One widely shared example showed a stick labeled as a 16GB DDR5-5600 module from a well-known manufacturer, yet the chips themselves were marked as coming from a different major DRAM maker – an immediate red flag for trained eyes. On closer inspection, the chips had unusually rounded edges and a pale outline where they met the board. When one was removed and cut open, there was no silicon die inside at all, only plastic or fiberglass shaped to resemble a chip. In some cases, large brand stickers and replacement labels are already being sold separately, making these counterfeit memory modules even more believable.
