When you start an Incognito Chat with Meta AI, WhatsApp creates a private, temporary session that only you can see on your device. The conversation is processed in a secure environment and is not saved, so there is no persistent chat history for Meta to analyze or retain. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls this the company’s first major AI product with no conversation logs stored on servers. The key to WhatsApp Incognito Chat is confidential computing, a security technique that processes encrypted AI conversations inside a locked-down hardware enclave. Meta describes this as “Private Processing”: messages leave your phone encrypted, are decrypted only inside a Trusted Execution Environment running on specialized AMD- and Nvidia-powered servers, and are then re-encrypted before being sent back. Even Meta, as the service provider, cannot peek inside that enclave or view the questions and answers. WhatsApp says it cannot observe details such as the size of traffic between orchestration services and classification models that might reveal anything about the AI’s output. In effect, Meta is operating what WhatsApp’s head Will Cathcart likens to “a giant phone for AI” that the company itself does not have the passcode to unlock. This architecture aims to deliver powerful AI while preserving the same security properties users expect from end-to-end encrypted messaging.
Ephemeral by Design: Messages That Vanish When the Session Ends
Incognito Chat is ephemeral by default, going further than most disappearing-message or incognito modes in other AI products. When you close the session, lock your phone, or exit the app, the conversation ends and Meta AI’s context is wiped. WhatsApp emphasizes that your messages are not stored on Meta’s servers, positioning this as a sharp contrast to many generative AI platforms that keep logs—sometimes for months—even when they offer a private or anonymous mode. On your device, the chat thread itself also disappears once the session is closed, eliminating lingering local transcripts. This approach targets a major privacy concern around encrypted AI conversations: users want to explore ideas, troubleshoot personal problems, or draft sensitive content without creating a permanent, provider-controlled record. By combining confidential computing with automatic deletion, WhatsApp is trying to align AI assistance with the expectations set by its long-standing end-to-end encryption.
Addressing AI Data Collection Fears and Safety Responsibilities
Incognito Chat arrives amid widespread unease about how AI chatbot providers collect and reuse user data. Many services log prompts by default and may leverage them to train future models, heightening discomfort when people share private financial, health, or work information. WhatsApp and Meta are positioning Incognito Chat as an answer to those Meta AI privacy worries, explicitly stating that no one—including the company—can read these encrypted AI conversations. However, the very privacy that protects users also raises questions about oversight and liability. Chatbots have previously been blamed for harmful or misleading advice, and critics may worry that confidential computing makes auditing misuse harder. Beyond WhatsApp: Incognito Chat, Meta AI App, and Future Side Chat
The Incognito Chat experience is available both inside WhatsApp and within the standalone Meta AI app, making confidential computing a core part of Meta’s broader AI assistant strategy. Under the hood, the feature is powered by Meta’s latest Muse Spark model, which replaces the smaller models used in earlier WhatsApp AI experiments. That shift promises more capable responses while still preserving the strong privacy guarantees of end-to-end secure processing. To keep the experience usable despite the overhead of running models inside secure cloud enclaves, Meta has focused on reducing latency with optimized routing. Looking ahead, the company plans to extend the concept with a feature called Side Chat, which will let you invoke Meta AI privately within an existing WhatsApp conversation without alerting other participants. Meta says Incognito Chat will roll out globally over the coming months, and future updates are expected to add image and voice support alongside today’s text-only interactions.
